Tony Stewart believes team has ‘perfect scenario’ after win at Sylvania 300 – NASCAR news
Tony Stewart finally admitted on Sunday that he does have a shot at the Sprint Cup after winning his second consecutive Chase race.
Stewart now leads the points’ standings by 7 points ahead of Kevin Harvick and is only the second driver to have won two consecutive Chase races since Greg Biffle in 2008.
Stewart believed that they did not have the car to win the race and it was only when he managed to get out of the traffic that he felt that the car had something in it. He said that it was hard to see someone lose out in the way that Clint Bowyer did but
at this stage, he will take the win whichever way he gets it.
Bowyer had been leading the race up until the final three laps in which his car ran out of gas and he eventually finished in 22nd place.
Looking ahead to the next race in Dover, Stewart said that the team has really struggled on that track and that was the chase that worried him the most. Therefore, he was glad to be in a scenario where he was leading the rest of the drivers.
Stewart praised his entire team for the effort that they have put in over the last couple of months and claimed “they never give up.”
Commenting on the irony of the victory, Stewart said he knew exactly how Clint Bowyer must be feeling right now. Stewart went through the exact same thing with Bowyer taking advantage of his misfortune in 2010 at New Hampshire. He admitted Bowyer had the
better car and he would not have been able to overtake him had it not been for the fuel incident.
Stewart was cryptic when asked what had brought about this sudden change in the team’s fortunes.
“Well, we got rid of some dead weight earlier this week. So, it made it a lot easier. It’s been a big weight lifted off our shoulders,” said Stewart. “Just sometimes you have to make adjustments in your life and we did that and it has definitely helped this
weekend for sure.”
Stewart did not elaborate further on this and neither did crew chief Darian Gibbs, although they both did confirm that no team personnel had changed.
