Tony Thompson is next for Wladimir Klitschko – Boxing News
Tony Thompson, Wladimir Klitschko’s upcoming opponent, has said he was not impressed with Wad’s knockout victory over Jean-Marc Mormeck. He called the bout an ‘infomercial’ asserting that Mormeck was never up to the mark to face Wladimir in the first place.
Thompson stands with 36 wins, 2 losses and 24 knockouts in his portfolio and he is the IBF mandatory challenger to Wladimir. Wladimir has to fight Thompson by mid-July at any cost. Thompson’s exact remarks for Wladimir vs. Mormeck were, “It was an infomercial
at best. Mormeck is a tough cruiserweight but he’s not an impressive opponent for the heavyweight champion of the world…it was interesting that it seemed that Wladimir mentioned everyone in the division but me. I knew my shot was next, and I’m doing everything
to solely focus on beating him. I just want to fight, point blank. It doesn’t matter to me where it takes place. If he wants to come over here, great. If he wants to fight in Germany thats great too.”
It should be noted here that this would be the second bout between Thompson and Wladimir. Wladimir previously defeated Thompson in 2008 via knockout. However, Thompson has refused to accept his defeat to date saying that he was already injured before the
bout, which is why he could not give his 100% to Wladimir. As of now, Thompson believes he is healthy and in the right condition to take on a tough opponent like Wladimir. He asserted, “I’m ready. I’m done waiting for this part of my life to be over and I’m
looking forward to becoming the heavyweight champion of the world.”
Wladimir’s victory Mormeck has been heavily criticised by analysts around the world. Most analysts were of the view that Mormeck was a misfit for the match. Things went so bad that a day before the bout, Wladimir and his promoter had organised a press conference
to tell everyone that Mormeck is not a mismatch. However, after the bout it was obvious that Mormeck was not even close to be Wladimir’s opponent. The way Wladimir took him down was embarrassing for a fighter like Mormeck.
