Tony Tucker: I do not want to see Floyd Mayweather vs. Saul Alvarez – Boxing News
Tony Tucker, former International Boxing Federation heavyweight champion, said he does not want the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Saul Alvarez happening. According to Tucker, who held the championship in 1987, Floyd should stay away from Alvarez if
he wants to retire unbeaten.
Tony Tucker is a native of Grand Rapids. While discussing the possibility of a bout between Mayweather and Alvarez, Tucker said, “I'd hate to see that fight happen. I like seeing my homeboy do well and I want to see him retire undefeated. I don't want to
see him fight that young lion.”
Tucker even discussed the upcoming bout between Shane Mosley and Saul Alvarez, which will happen tomorrow as an undercard fight of the event being headlined by Mayweather vs. Cotto. Shane Mosley has already lost his stint and most analysts believe that he
will lose to Alvarez. Tucker was asked to comment on it and he said, “I think they took this fight not knowing the total circumstances of what was going on with me. People go through a lot of different things in their life. But when it clears up, you see a
different fighter. My problems were things going on outside the ring.”
According to Tucker, if Mayweather fights against Alvarez, there are chances that the unbeaten American WBC welterweight champion will lose. It should be noted here that if Alvarez and Mayweather win their respective bouts, a bout between them is possible.
Therefore, it is important for Floyd Mayweather not to just win this fight but also prove his mettle to keep Alvarez away.
Moreover, it should be noted here that Floyd Mayweather already has two possible top-notch opponents in the line, WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and former IBF and WBA super lightweight champion Amir Khan. In his previous interview, Mayweather
spoke about beating Amir Khan, which is an indication of the fact that he is looking forward to fight the British-Pakistani pugilist more than he is willing to fight Manny Pacquiao.
No indication from Mayweather or his camp has been made over a possible bout between Mayweather and Alvarez yet.
