my son is 20mths old and has had never a problem with his bowel movements (only when he's sick) but lately his poos are starting to be pebbles or one really big stiff log that looks painfull to have passed. his diet has only changed coz he wanted it changed. like he doesnt want weetbix for breakfast, he wants toast or doesnt want a sandwich for lunch, he wants some sort of pasta. but thankfully will still eat meat and veges for dinner!

so yeah, my question is, is it too much or too little fibre and which ever one it is, how can i put it in his diet without him not wanting to eat it??

  1. Well first of all, I would add more fruit & veggies to his diet. Make sure he is getting enough water to drink thru out the day. Remember your the parent and your in charge of his well being! Being constipated can cause health problems and also effect how much he eats. You can always ask your doc. for information. Does he eat sugary foods, if so cut way back on them.

  2. I have a nearly 3 yr old daughter. She eats good fruit and veggies and still has rather firm to hard poo. Everyone has different bowel movements so it's hard to say.

If your child will eat veggies and fruit then give it to him whatever he wants. I noticed pear (or even the tin ones) works very well for my daughter.

If your child doesn't like fruit or veggies then last resort can be the fibre powder thing. It's tasteless and odourless you can put in drinks or food. Go to chemist and ask about it.

Try raisins or some dry fruit too. Most kids like those things don't give too much though they are high in sugar.

Also try "inner health plus for kids" ask chemist about it. It helps to improve little tummies.  I put my daughter on it permenantly to improve her stomach etc. Not cheap but I will recommend it to anyone with children.

When your child is a bit over 2 yrs old you can try "sanitarium up and go" in that little packet of drink it has two weetbix plus milk so it has lots of fibre and lots of calcium. Some sugar too but I don't see the harm, as long as you don't give lots of sweets.

    Good luck!!

p.s. drink plenty of water too. Limit juice intake because of the sugar.
