Too many strikers spoil the pitch, Andres Villas Boas’ challenge at Chelsea
After almost thirty days without a manager, after sacking Carlo Ancelotti at the end of last season, Chelsea’s search for a manager seems to have finally come to an end. After being linked with Guus Hiddink, the Blues have now signed Andres Villas Boas.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 squad expected to grow during the summer transfer
window.
While he will most likely have little or no trouble in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Neymar-c27639
and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Romelu-Lukaku-c31672.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Radamel-Falcao-c30276
has claimed he will follow Andres Villas Boas to the London club.
The 25-year-old striker is not someone Chelsea will be willing to reject, the Colombian has amazing statistics. In 85 appearances in all competitions for Porto over the last two seasons Falcao scored a remarkable 73 goals.
His style of play is similar to Fernando Torres, the Blues record breaking signing in the January transfer window, which makes one wonder who Villas Boas will choose to play in his starting XI. With the Spaniard failing to link-up with Drogba last season,
it seems highly unlikely he will be able to partner Falcao.
Speaking of Drogba, the Ivory Coast international has been linked with a few clubs for a move away from Chelsea, but nothing is certain. He was offered a contract by Chelsea, which will keep him at Stamford Bridge for possibly the rest of his career if he
accepts.
If that is the case, then the 33-year-old forward will continue to expect preference above the other strikers in terms of starting. He has been the first choice striker for the Blues since he arrived at the club in 2004 and has won the Golden Boot twice,
in 2007 and 2010.
Replacing him will be tough and would have to be done tactfully, not like quite like Ancelotti, who replaced Torres with Drogba. The result of which was not favourable, apart from which it created a rift between the squad.
Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou also had to take second place to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044 and Fernando Torres, because of which neither of them were happy. While Anelka maintained his silence over the issue, Kalou recently spoke out, accusing certain players in the
squad of “pouting and sulking.”
He was referring to Torres, but many people assumed he was talking about himself. Fail.
If some of the existing strikers are not off loaded in the summer, then it will be close to impossible for Villas Boas to develop a winning team while keeping the squad satisfied. The players expected to be heading towards a Stamford Bridge exit are Didier
Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Salomon-Kalou-c32266.
Drogba and Anelka could be made to leave simply because they are 33 and 32 years old, respectively, and are now considered too old to be effective anymore. Kalou on the other hand, has not managed to prove himself during his time with the Blues and could
be off loaded to make room for other strikers.
Last but not least, Daniel Sturridge has just returned from his loan spell at Bolton Wanderers. The 21-year-old did exceptionally well at the Reebok Stadium, scoring 8 goals in 12 appearances, proving he has what it takes to make it to the Chelsea first
team.
When Villas Boas does officially take over Chelsea manager, he will have some tough decisions to make, in terms of new signings and off loading existing players to ensure a functional and effective squad.
