Question:

Too much oil was put into a new mower, how can i fix this?

we bought a briggs and stratten mower and too much oil was put in. i emptied alot of the oil out. the only way it turns over is if i prime it. the problem is it won't stay running. what can i do?

  1. Drain the oil until it is at the full mark on the dipstick.  The drain plug is on the underside of the engine.  Make sure it is full but not overfull.  Remove the air filter.  Check it for oil.  If it has oil on it, replace it.  Wipe up any oil from the air box.  Put in the new filter and it should be good to go.  It may smoke a bit but it will clear up.


  2. Dano, make sure you do not have to much oil in it now.  Take plug out and clean it and replace it.  Your lawn mower will smoke and die until all excess oil is burned out.  You most likely did no harm.  Just keep starting it will correct its self.  Do not hold pull cord tight in hand while starting,  some times when to much oil has been added it will make recoil cord kick back.
