Question:

Tools needed for replacing a interior door slab.

Ok I live in a rental house and because of kids and dogs I have to replace the doors on the interior of the house.

My question is, besides a drill what are the other tools that I need to replace these doors? .

I know that I need 2 hole saws one for the k**b and one for the latch. I also know that I need either a chisel or some type of router to cut the out where the hinges go. I am probably going to use a chisel. Are there any other tools required for this?

I guess this brings me to the second part of my question. I worked for Lowes approx 10 years ago and vaguely remember something about being able to order slabs that already had the holes cut in them and the hinges routed out. Am I correct? If not what size hole saws do I need and is there a template for the hinges?

  1. Your project is not as intimidating as you think.

Go to your home center  (Home Depot/Lowes) and buy a new door lock installation kit.  It comes with the hole saws, templates and instructions for using correctly.  I think the cost is about $20.

Some slabs do come pre drilled for the lockset but most do not have mortise for the hinges.  But not to worry... a sharp hand chisel and a little patience will do the job just fine.

You may find that the first door takes you a couple of hours but each one you do after that will get easier.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  2. Chances are if you have hinge pockets already cut in door they will not line up with the hinges on the jambs.

You need a 2-1/8" hole saw for most k***s on the face of the door, and a 1" hole saw to drill for the bolt in the edge of the door.

Measure the hinges you have on your current door- should be 3-1/2" or 4". Note if they have rounded corners. Don't plan on using a router - you need a jig and it doesn't take that long to hand cut them once you get used to it.Get a good sharp 3/4" wood chisel, a utility knife, 1/2" drill, 1/8" drill bit.

Take a door down and transfer hinge pocket lines onto new door. Clamp old door right on top of new door - transfer lines with a square.

Cut outline of hinge pocket with utility knife about 3/16" deep. Take chisel and easily chisel out the pocket. When hinges are all done - hang door and close it to mark center of k**b to line up with strike plate on jamb. Drill hole from one side, then come from other side to finish. Drill hole in end of door, Install bolt in edge of door and mark to recess it. Use utility knife to cut out outline and chisel to take out wood.Install handle.

You can buy what's called a "butt gauge" this marks hinges in one smack with a hammer - just get size that matches your current hinges.
