Question:

Tooth abcess...? concerned about infection?

I've had a tooth abcess for a while now due to a filling which has diseased the nerve. I went to the dentist a few weeks ago and he said it was a dental abcess (finally, after other fifty million dentists misdiagnosed it) and I had an appointment for a root canal booked. But then, the dentist didn't show up (awesome eh) so now I've got to wait until the 17th of September to get the root canal done, and when i went to the dentist when he diagnosed it he said it was draining then so there shouldn't be any problems at the moment which is why i needed the canal done soon as, but now it's playing up after i've eaten again and im concerned about infections spreading, tooth pain etc until 17th september. Can anyone shed any light as to whether or not it will become an infection again and the likelihood of it spreading and causing major problems before my root canal?

  1. Take a deep breath, first. Believe me, I know firsthand that tooth pain and infections royally suck (for lack of a better word). Have you asked your dentist this same question? He should've given you something for it, is my feeling. I have a wisdom tooth coming through, and I don't know if you've dealt with it, but food gets trapped back there and it gets infected a lot. My dentist gave me a special mouthwash to help keep it cleaned out..

I feel that if you keep your mouth clean and take care of it until your appointment, you should be okay. If it does become abcessed again, or you are feeling a lot of pain, you need to call your dentist and see if they can give you something to help until your appointment. I've got an extraction on the 10th, and because I've had many pain/infection issues with the tooth, my dentist gave me mouthwash to keep it clean, penicillin to help infection, and motrin for pain.

I would call and see what they can do for you until you get in hun...I know it's no fun. Good luck

  2. There is a good chance it will become reinfected, but I don't think it will spread or cause any other problems.  I've had an abcessed tooth before and couldn't get into the dentist for awhile, and it didn't spread or cause any other major problems.  I would rinse your mouth out with salt water, and maybe call the dentist office and see he can prescribe you an anitbiotic if you are really worried about it.  Hope it doesn't hurt to bad, and if it does, call the dentist and see if you can also get a script for a some mild pain medicine.

    Good luck until then!

  3. A tooth abscess occurs if you have some infection that means bacteria. A sinus will generally let the infected pus come out of the abscess but it is not going to remove the bacteria or infection. The infection is there but because you have a sinus that is draining(removing) the infected pus, the infection will go in for a chronic(that is not active) stage,. this does not remove the infection. Any sudden pressure or food particle can give you pain and increase the infection. For now try not to bite food from that side of the mouth. It should not cause any major problems before the root canal if you keep the area clean.

Once root canal is started it will give you relief.
