Question:

Tooth extraction and eating?

Has your dog ever had to have a tooth extraction? What did you feed him/her afterward? I know the vet will tell me when I pick Molly up tomorrow. I was just thinking about going out and buying her food at lunch if she was going to need a special kind of food.

  1. My vet usually liked to strongly suggest that if I'm a good and caring owner, I would buy their super expensive tins of recovery diet.

Well, since I'm not, I gave my Dobe soft boiled rice and small pieces of chicken or fish.

  2. I feed Sasha the same food I had...just softened it with warm water...like she was a puppy again

you could alway puree' the food with a bit of the fruit you feed too, It will keep the diet the same, and save you a bit of cash

  3. Yes, Our Beagle Got 2 Back Teeth Pulled Last Year.  The Vet Told Us To Keep Giving Him The Same Food As Always But This Time Soften It With Some Water.  We Were Instructed To Do This For 2 Weeks And Also Gave Us A Weeks Worth Of Pain Meds To Induce Any Pain He Might Feel.

Even Though He Had 2 Back Teeth And A Tumor On His Belly (It Wasn't Cancerous) Taken Out That Week, Bandit Was Still Very Energetic And Alert.  He Never Really Acted Like Anything Happened To Him.  We Were Surprised He Was Acting This Way B/c He Is Not A Young Dog (12 Yrs.)!

Anyways, I Don't Believe That You Should Have To Go Out And Buy Special Food For Her B/c You Can Just Soak It In Some Water.  If She's Anything Like My Dog Was She'll Be Fine In Less Than A Week

    HIH! :)

  4. probably some kind of yummy soft food. i know you cant tell if it is yummy, lol. but i would get something like pedigree can food. my dogs seem to love that stuff. I gave that to my dog who got his teeth cleaned and the vet said his teeth are really bad, and since he is 13 yrs old they said that they aren't gonna try to fix it, just make sure he isn't in any pain when he eats. so when we notice him whimpering we gave him wet food and he loved it. and they don't have to chew it they just l**k it up.

    Hope this Helped!

  5. Ask your vet when you pick her up or give her a call.

When my puppy gets her teeth cleaned or anything, her mouth will become very sensitive, so we put a little bit of warm water on her hard food, stir it up, and let it sit for a few minutes to get nice and soft.  The pain of chewing will be minor at most, and your dog won't stray away from eating.

Wetting the food like this, for my puppy anyways, also helps if I need her to eat quickly.  She gets so excited when her food is softened up.
