Question:

Toothache/anti-biotics

I went to the dentist on Tuesday as I was in agony with toothache and she explained that I need root canal surgery. I was prescribed 5 days anti-biotics and some neurofen tablets.

I started taking the anti-biotics on Wednesday and I am now nearly at the end of day threes worth of tablets with two more days to go.

Since wednesday, I have had to continue taking the nuerfeon but the amount has decreased where I am now taking 2 tablets every 24 hours approximately, but there is always a dull ache there and the pain, although not unbearable has now spread into my cheek and into my ear. I have also had slight swelling on my jaw and surrounding area since Wednesday after I started taking the anti-biotics.

I would have thought that it would have improved by now. Just wondered from peoples experiences whether they think that in the next two days, the pain could go.

  1. if a root canal treatment was needed, it should have been started immediately. When you start a RCT you drain out the abscess immediately & you dont need any antibiotics or pain killers.

  2. Sounds very much as though an abscess has formed but without examination or x-ray difficult to be sure.

Make sure you complete the anti biotic course because to be effective you have to take the whole course.

You say the pain has decreased which is all that is important now until you have the canal seen to.

  3. I just had my second root canal done a few months ago. The pain does not go away until they drill out the roots. My oral surgeon prescribed pain pills as well as the antibiotics but even that didn't really work.

I will never again miss my routine checkups. Root canals are very expensive and there is nothing worse than a tooth ache.
