  1. IN THE RING

    1. Muhammad ALI: We might never have seen just how much greater he could have been.

    2. Joe Louis: Perfect Boxer.  He could fight comfortably at 210 if he had to.  That would help him deal with the dinosaurs.

    3. Larry Holmes:  Larry had it ALL.  Only ALI's lateral movement would cause problems.  Holmes would have been forced to FIGHT Louis who has an edge in power and hand speed.

    4. Lennox Lewis: Not very popular with many but he's the Only BIG Man (over 235) who can fight.  I give him 50/50 against Louis because of the size difference.  Larry and ALI are both big enough to take enough punches but do more damage and stop Lennox.  If he were more aggressive he might be higher.

    5. George Forman: George lost to ALI but he would never have lost to Jimmy Young had he not fought ALI first.  He wasn't THAT bad at boxing.  He just fell into the bad habit of relying too much on his power.

    6. Evander Holyfield: He's tough as nails with a heart the size of Georgia.  He doesn't punch as hard as some but he's very accurate.  He's probably the best pure "Boxer" on the list.

    7. Mike Tyson: Another who is'nt very popular on this board.  Still, there isn't much the rest could do against Mike's blend of early SPEED and POWER.  If you can get Mike past 6 you have a very good chance of beating him.

    8. Rocky Marciano: SIZE is the ONLY thing that keeps him from being ranked higher.  Sorry, but 5'10"/188lbs. Just does NOT beat 6'5"/240lbs.  It's just the reality of it.  If Rocky could carry 202lbs. comfortably (which I think he could) he would be higher.  I give him a good chance to extend Tyson past the mid rounds and stop him late.

    9. Jack Johnson: He's often ranked so high for 2 reasons.  1. He's the first Black champion.  2. He "Boxed" when his comtemporaries "Slugged".  Fighters didn't know defense during Jack's time.  Still, he had formidable skills.  I Really don't think he would have the answers for Rocky's style.

    10. Sonny Liston: Sonny didn't accomplish much and might have blown Rocky out early.  If he didn't, he would be stopped late.

    11. Jack Dempsey: I just don't buy the ligitimacy of all those early KO's given the rules of the day.  Jack would never have accomplished such a feat with an 8 count rule.

    12. Joe Frazier:  A wrecking machine with a heart the size of PA.  Still, consider his average chin and take out the ALI win.  What's left?

    HISTORICAL IMPACT

    1. Joe Louis: Most title defense.  A record that will never be broken.  America's Champion.  ALI has just as many reasons to be #1.  Both did more for Black athletes than any other fighter or athelet period.  The only difference is that Joe Louis did it first.

    2. Muhammad ALI: NO One has ever given up so much for what he belived in.  He opened a lot of doors for Black athletes and bridged much of America.  ALI was, in so many ways, the opposite of Joe Louis.

Where Louis dodged traffic and made it to the finish line and died pennyless,  ALI trekked through the sewers and ended up on top of Mt. Everest (or Fugi, h**l, take your pick).  He could easily be number one.  It depends on how you look at it.  Both he and Louis made a LOT of difference.  Louis did it first.

    3. Rocky Marciano: He has a lot of short comings when you stack him up against other champions.  Still, Rocky fought everyone around during his time and beat everyone.  You can't argue with perfection.

    4. Jack Dempsey: Timing was the best thing for Dempsey.  He fought during a hard time for the US.  He was good for his time and popular forever.

    5. Jack Johnson: Read the papers about race problems TODAY.  It's a shame we have not evolved above this ugly side of humanity.  Now go back 100 years.  I'm surprised there hasn't been SOMETHING on the news or HBO about the 100 year anniversary of Johnson's title win.

    6. George Forman:  TWO Georges!  (or half an army if you count all his kids).  Still, what a way to turn around and resurrect a career.

These are the ones who did special things.  The rest is a small list but none of them did anything that I can consider Special.  Here are their accomplishments.

    7. Mike Tyson: Youngest champion.  Patterson could argue that.  His was undisputed.

    8. Larry Holmes: Nearly tied the records of both Louis AND Marciano before taking Michael Spinks lightly and being robbed in the rematch.

    9. Jim Jeffries:  Had he not given in to the pressure of the public and returned to face Johnson, it would be HE, not Marciano who could claim FIRST.  Still, it doesn't stop Rocky from doing the same years later.

    10. Evander Holyfield:  Some call him "4-time" champ.  That means he surpasses ALI.  Sorry, but there was always SOMEONE who could lay claim to Champion during his 4th win.

    Honorable mention: Tunney, Holyfield

Ali beats Louis, due to speed and granite jaw. (Louis vs Conn fight as evidence)

Marciano's undefeated record gives him #3 although he would have a very difficult time with Holmes and Foreman!

Holmes and Foreman would be a great matchup! I give Holmes a slight edge due to boxing ability. Foreman had problems with Young and Ali both boxers

  7. Lets see..

    Ali>Foreman

    Foreman>Frazier

    Douglas>Tyson

    Tyson>Holyfield
