Top 10 horses of 2012 GB season - Part 4
Mayson and The Fugue are languishing respectively at ninth and tenth place in the list of top 10 horses of the 2012 season. Yet, there is a lot to talk about these two giants for the game.
After winning a Listed race in April, Mayson stepped up to the graded level, and continued the brilliant work. Living up to the expectations, the Richard Fahey-trained won the Group 3, Pearl Bloodstock Palace House Stakes at Newmarket.
After two straight wins, the 4-year-old lost his rhythm, and completed the order of finish, when promoted to the Group 2 level. After facing plenty of embarrassment at York, he raised his game, and ended up fifth in a tough Group 3 competition at Newcastle.
His biggest win of the season came at Newmarket, where he unexpectedly won the Group 1, Darley July Cup (British Champions Series And Global Sprint Challenge) in July. By beating the likes of Society Rock and The Cheka, the 20-1 chance raised many eyebrows.
The son of Invincible Spirit did not run poorly on his latest start. In the Group 1, Qatar Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp in France, he missed the crown only by a neck’s distance. Owned by D. W. Armstrong & Cheveley Park Stud, the bay colt has developed a
habit of creating upsets, and there is surely a lot more to come from his side.
As far as The Fugue’s case is concerned, the brown filly is not doing anything wrong these days. John Gosden’s charge has been performing consistently since the start of this season, and has won a couple of races so far.
She won her first Group One at Goodwood in August, when beating Timepiece by a length’s distance in the Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes. On her latest start, the Lord Lloyd-Webber-owned was second to Shareta.
There is still a lot of drama left in the season. A few of the top 10, particularly Camelot, will try to learn a lesson from previous mistakes. No big shuffling is likely, but there will be some changes in the standings, as the season goes on. We wish the
best of luck to all the horses.
