Top 14 round-one: Stade Francais opens with a win against Bourgoin-Jallieu
Stade Francais made no mistakes this weekend, as they defeated Bourgoin-Jallieu at home in their first match of the 2010-11 season.
Francais opened up a commanding first-half lead and did not look back for the rest of the match. In the end the heavy favourites dominated the underdog Bourgoin side winning 43-12.
Recap
Stade Francais opened the scoring with a penalty from scrum-half Julien Dupuy in the third minute.
Bourgoin was able to keep pace early however, as Alberto Di Bernardo knocked down two penalties in a row, in the fifth and 10th minutes.
However, Francais brought the game back to a tie when Dupuy hit a penalty only a minute later, then swiftly took the lead in the 16th minute with another score.
Nevertheless, Matias Viazzo notched the two sides up once again at 9-9.
After that, Francais took over, as Dimitri Szarzewski trotted over the whitewash, and Dupuy managed a conversion in the 39th minute to give the home side a 16-9 lead heading into halftime.
After the break it became clear that Francais was the class of the match. Mathieu Bastareaud dashed over the line to give Francais their second try of the day in the 41st minute, and only seven minutes later number eight Sergio Parisse managed a try of his own, making the score 28-12.
Stade Francais was not done however, as winger Julien Arias touched down for a try in the 62nd minute, with Dupuy notching the conversion, and then a penalty five minutes later the extend the lead further.
Full-back Hugo Southwell put the icing on the cake with a try in the 70th minute, putting the game well out of Bourgoin’s reach.
Francais was able to coast through the final 10 minutes of the match, completing a routing of Bourgoin 43-12.
Francais got a full team effort as five different players crossed the line to register tries, while Dupuy kicked for 18 points.
Bourgoin-Jullieu was simply unable to push through Stade’s impressive defence and could only settle for a mere four penalties.
Analysis
Francais did exactly what they were expected to do against an inferior opponent, and will take home a great number of positives from their first round win.
Bourgoin on the other hand will have a great deal of regrouping to do, as they were unable to generate anything at the offensive end. Bourgoin has plenty of changes to make before their second-round match up next week.
