Top 25 Possible January Transfer Targets (Part 1)
After the Christmas break, January transfer window will open up for one month and many managers will look to sign players permanently or on loan if they need backing up their squads for injuries and calling in reinforcements as the first half of the season
takes its toll on the players.
Let’s take a look at those players who might want to switch sides and who might be wanted by the hopeful managers:
Sebastian Larsson (Birmingham City):
Larsson’s contract will expire at the end of the season and Alex McLeish would want to renew it. The right winger has made 170 appearances for the Blues and proved himself to be a quality Premier League player. If he wants to leave on a new mission, he surely
will have many suitors who would love to get his signature.
West Ham and Blackburn Rovers are rumoured to be interested in him and if the playmaker’s new contract talks breakdown, Birmingham would want to sell the player in January rather than letting the Swede walk away for nothing. Larsson’s set pieces and vision
can be vital for a team that is lying in the relegation zone.
Steven Defour (Standard Liege):
The 22 year old has been on the Manchester United scouting radar for over a year now and the Belgian has himself expressed his desire to play for Manchester United.
However, Sir Alex has made it pretty clear that he has no intention of buying anyone in the January window and is happy with his current squad. So, Liverpool might want to give the Belgian a look. With a price tag of £12 million, it won’t be such a bad signing
for any of these teams.
Edin Dzeko (Wolfsburg):
This tall Bosnian striker averages a goal every two games for his club Wolfsburg and is a hot property with teams like Juventus, Manchester City, Manchester United and Bayern Munich seemingly interested in his services.
Wolfsburg are currently lying at 8th position in Bundesliga and Dzeko would want to leave for a club where he can achieve more success domestically and in Europe. Wherever this lad goes, goals will follow him almost certainly. £30 or 35 million
might be too hard to resist for Wolfsburg.
Shay Given (Manchester City):
Last season, the Republic of Ireland international was the first name in the Manchester City line up but the emergence of Joe Hart this season has seen him warming the bench. He is yet to feature for City and is understandably frustrated at the lack of chances.
He is almost surely the one who would be anxiously waiting for the transfer window to open up and being such an experienced stopper, many clubs would love to see him between the goal posts for their sides. Arsenal have a goalkeeper crisis with Almunia and
Fabianski making errors every now and then. Arsene Wenger might want to splash some cash to improve the goalkeeping department and Shay Given will see more game time wherever he goes.
Pepe Reina (Liverpool):
Liverpool’s Pepe Reina is thought to be upset and unsettled due to lack of success at Anfield recently. He is reportedly looking to move on and if the rumours are true, Sir Alex seems to be interested in signing up the Spaniard as Edwin Van der Sar is probably
playing his last season for the club.
Reina has been at Liverpool for the past 5 years and averages 50 games a season. The 28 year old has a career ahead and would want to play for a top club if he wants to become Spain’s number 1 in the future.
