Rome is a beautiful place.  The 3 best places I'd recommend is the Colosseum, Sistine chapel and st. Peters basilica.

You can do the trevi fountain and the spanish steps in 10 minutes each, and the colluseum in Ephesus is far better preserved (if you get chance to visit Turkey one day) so I would go with:

1) Sistene Chapel in the Vatican - small but stunning, and worth seeing what all the fuss is about

2) St Peters Basilica - worth it just for the statue of the Madonna by Michelangelo, and a staggering, impressive building.

3) Pantheon - I never went when I was in Rome, and from what I have heard since it is one of my biggest regrets.

read the book by Dan Brown called angels and demons, its a good book (fiction) and covers a lot of old buildings etc (church's etc) and will lead you on a merry chase.

I would suggest taking the hop on/hop off bus from Rome Termini (about 15 Euro). It takes a circular route to all the top tourist spots. You have to get off at the end (back at Termini) and can't circle again though. It gives you a good "lay of the land" idea of all the things to see and what is clustered together to make it easier to see in one day.  Example:  Colosseum and Roman Forum.  The bus is new, clean, some are double deckers, and air conditioned.

Different things to do:

--  There's a changing of the guard at the Presidential palace.

-- The old Roman road just outside the circle of the city is really cool to walk on plus there are two catacombs on that road. That was one of the most interesting things to see to me. (I lived in Rome for 13 months and saw lots).   You can get to this by take the subway to a spot where you can catch a bus to the old Roman road.

-- Rome is in the process of unearthing an old palace on one of the hills above the colosseum. Not many people know about it. My Italian friend told me about it.

-- See the church of the oranges where you can look through the key hole to see St. Peter's cathedral.

ROME -- just beside the main street to st peters square is the Borgo Pio which has great shops, bakeries, tratorria's etc. 
the pope usually has a general audience on wednesday's - free but you need a ticket.
vatican museum 12 euro's and another 3 at the coffee shop on the corner while you're waiting in line and take turns to run and get cofee LOL


when you go into churches you will have books for purchase -some of them are worth it and very interesting - about 5 euro - they will also have lighting for the main artwork - this ranges between the half and 1 euro - hand on to your coins as you can't usually get change!


colossuem was 10 euro (and watch out for the crooks in front in roman garb who pose for pictures with you -- i got rooked when i had nothing smaller than a 20 and he said 5 euro's each! they are NOT part of the facililty!!!)


castle san angelo 6 euro and make sure you know the history - made it more worth while
roasted chestnuts in Piazza Navonna -  a must!
pizza (lunch) 7-10 euro's
dinner 30 euro's should work - sometimes more sometimes less.
2-5 euros - gelato
1.10 euro - candy bar

go to www.romaturismo.it and they had a SUPER map that was our saving grace! i still have it as i mapped out various walking tours. it has the metro and city all mapped out and detailed.

please feel free to email me if you'd like the walking tours - we had 4 of them and the main and not so main things to see along the way. 

you have to get up to the Gianicolo & San Pietro on the Janniculum Hill and there is a church atop the mt. where they say St Peter was crucified -- it's a spot most people DO not visit as it's not the "famous" one -- it was darling na dreally something to see!

the other book i recommend = knopf mapguides - it's just perfect in size and has most of the informaion for the basics.

one thing i did that might sound silly.... i had a small journal with me everywhere and took notes - sometimes simple ones but.... with 6 days it can get a little overwhelming and you don't want to missout on remembering just what that picture was! for example - to the left of the street coming up to the vatican is a little know church called Santo Spirito - it was built in the 1200's Michelangelo did the ceiling - it was a hospital at one point during one of the many sieges/battles and returned to a church! the ceiling was beautiful!

thanks for the trip down memory lane and have a lovely time!!! Ooh dress in layers and take a scarf or hat!!! a strurdy wind proof jacket would work best!

sorry this is sooooo long but i had to *** becuase i almost forgot - the Scala Santa - right acorss from St John Lateran - it was really something!

ooh and most places close int he afternoon about 4p then the restuarants open at 7-8pm.

those a re a few of the things most people don't mention but we really enjoyed.  st cecelia's in the ghetto and some other out of the way places were really something!!

PS - the metro is super and very easy to navigate even if you don't know Italian!  someone mentioned the spanish steps are a waste of time.... true unless you have loads of extra time!

Rome is an awsome place and has sooo much to offer. If your in to all the history that Rome has to offer you will be set.

You can take a special bus that in 2 hours make  the tour of all the city, so you can see also Piazza Venezia - L Altare della Patria- Terme- Circo Massimo and so on....

Sorry I'd have to say 4) THE PANTHEON which is truly staggering, and not to be missed.

The Spanish steps are total rubbish. There's no point to them. Same with the Trevi fountain, -over-rated and swarming with yanks.

Don't be tempted to visit the "Ara Pacis" which looks like an interesting building, but it's just full of a load of old stonework inside.

Rome's brilliant- probably the best place I have ever been. Enjoy!

ps I hope you like looking at old buildings because that's what Rome is all about.  Oh yes and spending money!!

The Vatican of course! (including the museum). The Coliseum and the Venetian Plaza.

I was there last year and I found Rome to be much more than what I expected...A very positive thing about Rome is that everything is very near and you do not need a lot of time to see MANY attractions. You may even have the chance to explore around Rome in the 5 days you are there.

1. Vatican on a Sunday morning - pope comes out and does mass at 12!! Amazing

2. Collusium - You can feel what the atmosphere would have been like all those years ago
