  1. There is not such thing as the top 5 brokerage firms, but every once in a while Barons will run a article listing their top firms but it's not reality and mostly political

It depends on what you are looking for in a brokerage firm, and what type of business you are doing.

Brokerage firms have their own specialty, some are strickley retail while others are more dealers than they are brokerage.

There are trading firms, some trade on the floor, others in-house

There are underwriters, others a selling group members.

Some specialize in mutual funds while other in general securities,

There are those that deal with mostly over-the-counter securities while others are do only  a listed business,

Some are discounters while some are more full service

Depends on what you're looking for, but if you put it all together the top five would have to be

Fidelity Investments; Charles Schwab; JP Morgan; Merrill, Lynch; and Goldman Sachs

  2. Here is a link for you. MSN Money.

  3. There is no such thing as the top 5 brokerage firms because there are just too many different rankings out there.  Barron's has their own rankings.  SmartMoney has their own rankings.  Consumer Reports has their own rankings.  And guess what, different opinions lead to different top 5 brokerage firms.

I don't believe in rankings.  I believe the best broker depends on what you are looking for.  Some people may be looking for cheap commission rates.  Some people may be looking for excellent customer service.  Others may be looking for certain features such as dividend reinvestment (DRIP).

I currently use Firstrade ( http://www.firstrade.com/ ).  One reason why I switched from Scottrade was because they did not offer DRIPs.  Another plus was that Firstrade was slightly cheaper than Scottrade.  However, this didn't come without sacrifices.  One down side was that Firstrade did not have the many branches that Scottrade did.  Do your research carefully and pick the brokerage that is right for you.

  4. i started with zecco.....still use it, still very happy. only ones with no fee for stock trades, and no minumums.  it took me some time to see that most of my gains were lost to the fees i paid to actually buy stock and sell it....all the others will charge you fees for trading, but compare and see for yourself!
