  1. Here's one.......2005-2006. The Edmonton Oilers finished in 8th place in the west. For the Conference Quarter Finals they had to face the Detroit Red Wings who were the first seed. The Oilers beat them in 6 games when I (and everyone I knew) expected them to LOSE in 6 games.

Finally they went all the way to a game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. I believe they could've won too, if they didn't have goaltending problems.

  2. I had to actually think of one that doesn't involve the Canadien ..

How about the 90-91 North Stars? #16 seed in the playoffs and took the Penguins to 6 games before losing in the sc finals (if they'd not traded Larry Murphy during the season they probably finish higher in the regular season and maybe win the Cup .. we'll never know)

Key stars (no pun intended) on that team included Dave Gagner (father of Sean on the Oilers), also Neal Broten, Jon Casey, Brian Bellows and a 20-year old Mike Modano.

I feel old remembering the NORTH Stars in the NORRIS division of the CAMPBELL conference.

ps Congrats to Fresno State .. my dad's a Stanford grad ('52) so I was glad to see someone beat Georgia.

  3. The Miracle on Ice

  4. 1996 - Florida Panthers make final, following season they lost in 1st round against the Rangers(5 games).

1998 - Washington Capitals make final, following season they missed the playoffs.

1999 - Buffalo Sabres make final, following season the lost in 1st round against the Flyers(5 games).

2002 - Carolina Hurricanes make final, following season they missed the playoffs.

2003 - Minnesota Wild make conference final, following season they missed the playoffs.

2003 - The Anaheim Ducks make final, following season they missed the playoffs.

  5. i was gonna say 95 devs but lity beat me to it

total underdogs against detroit and we just plain sucked

  6. LITY, your confusing me.  I thought this year was the first time a European captain has won the cup?

  7. Red,

Nicklas Lidstrom was the first European-trained player to captain a cup-winning team.  Gottselig, european-born, was brought up in Canada.

  8. 1.  1938 Chicago Black Hawks

    - 14-25-9 in the regular season

    - dead last in goals for

    - second last in goals against

    - captained by a Ukranian (Johnny Gottselig)

    - defeated Montreal in 3 games to advance to round #2

    - defeated the New York Americans in 3 games to advance to the final

    - defeated the Maple Leafs in 4 games (3-1) to win their 2nd Cup.

    - the worst regular season record of any team to win the Cup

    2.  1995 New Jersey Devils

    - 9th overall in the NHL standings (worse overall ranking to win the Stanley Cup)

    3.  2002 Carolina Panthers

    - 16th overall seed

    - only time a #1 seed (Detroit) played a #16 seed in a Stanley Cup Final

    - Carolina finished last overall the next year (and Maurice was canned)

    4.  1991 Minnesota North Stars

    - 16th overall seed

    - lost to the 7th seeded Penguins (at the time the lowest seed to win the Stanley Cup)

    - the 1991 Stars had a top 5 goaltender in Jon Casey, and proven NHL stars in Neal Broten, Brian Bellows, and Mike Modano and were a far better team on paper than the 2002 Hurricanes

    5.  1994 Rangers

    - 19th the year before

    - they lost Vanbeisbrouck in the expansion draft

    - everybody wrote them off (26 of 27 Hockey News Experts picked them to miss the playoffs)

    - and they beat the 14th ranked Canucks in 7 games to end the 54 year curse

    scifientist

    - If everybody mentioned the word 'trained' I would be happy because that's what he is...........the first European born AND trained captain to win the Stanley Cup (Gottselig and Gardiner before him were born in Europe - but moved to Canada when young - but they were still European born!) .  Just like Jagr was the first European trained player to win the scoring title (Mikita came to Canada while in grade school).
