Top 5 Point Guards in NBA at the moment – NBA Feature
5. Russell Westbrook:
While his average assists in 2012 may not show for it, Russell Westbrook is indeed one of the best players at the position. Now whether he is one of the best point guards; is a different debate altogether.
Westbrook might have featured much higher on the ranking if it was not for his reputation to showboat and giving away too many turnovers. Perhaps we can blame it on his young exuberance and the will to do the extra bit, but one thing is clear that this young gun from Oklahoma City Thunder has a long way to go in his career. And it is a matter of two good seasons before he finds his true potential.
4. Deron Williams:
With a career APG of 9.2, Deron Williams is a player for the big games. Considered to be one of the best post-season performers in the NBA, Williams has been one of the most less talked about players when it comes to elite point guards. But this does not make him any lesser player.
The one criticism on Williams can be that he has failed to carry his teams in the past, be it Utah Jazz or the Nets last year, but this season he will finally have decent support surrounding him. In short, it will be a treat to watch Williams play at the Barclay’s Arena for the Brooklyn Nets and the season for once promises to bring him the appreciation he has always been deprived of.
3. Rajon Rondo:
Not many will question the Celtics star’s presence at number three. If there was one thing casting a doubt over his position, it was his ability to shoot. But last season removed any doubts over his ability to shoot. In fact if it did anything; it saw Rajon Rondo emerge as an outright scorer.
As the twilight era of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce approaches, it is evident that the reign of Rondo has just begun and after his thumping performances in the 2012 post season, it is not too long before Rondo will be an icon for the Celtics as well as the game.
2. Chris Paul:
With 9.1 assists per game in the 2012 season, Chris Paul surely earns a spot in the top five point guards in NBA. And it is not just the stats which make him one of the best in the game but it is his aggressive attitude in the court which makes him rise above the rest in the NBA.
To top it all off, assisting is not his only strength. Chris Paul is considered to be a better scorer at his position than his other contemporaries. With an average of 19.8 PPG, Paul brings a lot more to the game than just his facilitation and that is what earns him a second spot.
1. Derrick Rose:
While Rose might be away for the earlier half of the next season, it cannot undermine his ability as a player and the importance he holds to the Bulls’ camp.
Chicago Bulls’ favourite son is arguably one of the best all round point guards in the game. With a rising assist average of 7.9 last season, Rose has an average of nearly 22 points per game showing why the Bulls will not be the same team without him. He is the only man in the mentioned lot who has bagged an MVP award in his career and given his impact on the celebrated franchise, the number one slot is reserved for Rose.
