Top-5 scorers of the 2012 FIVB World League – Volleyball News
The 23rd edition of men’s annual premier international volleyball event, the 2012 FIVB World League, took centre stage on May 18 with a total of 16 teams from around the globe.
The big giants of volleyball came into stride and staged cracking action on the centre court. The tournament is still underway and it will go on till July 8.
According to the set formula of the competition, Pool A, Pool C, and Pool D teams have covered two flights of the opening round, while Pool B has completed all four segments of the preliminaries.
Here is the list of five players, who have scored the most number of points in the tournament so far:
Wallace de Souza – Brazil
Gavin Schmitt - Canada
Zbigniew Bartman – Poland
Mikko Oivanen – Finland
Michal Winiarski – Poland
Brazilian Wallace de Souza currently holds the top-scorer’s spot in the tournament. Team Brazil entered the competition in Pool B and appeared in a total of 12 matches during the first round of the tournament. Wallace de Souza led Brazil in the front row and did exceptionally well in the first-round matches. He helped his team with 196 points. He added 170 spikes, 15 blocks, and 11 serve-aces. Hence, he played a big role in leading Brazil to second position in Pool B of the 2012 FIVB World League. Brazil aimed for top slot on the ranking chart but dropped a couple of key matches, which pushed the team behind.
The second best-scorer of the competition Gavin Schmitt also comes from Pool B. He is from Canada and helped the national team with a total of 193 points in twelve matches. Schmitt proved the strength of his forearms and scored 169 points on spikes. Likewise, he did a wonderful job at serving and claimed 13 serve-aces. Furthermore, he was credited for 11 blocks in the first round. As a team Canada could not do well and settled in only third place with an overall record of 3-9.
No.3 on the list of top-scorers, Poland’s Zbigniew Bartman, proved to be the most effective player in his team. He staged a consistent performance throughout the preliminaries and charted a total of 182 points. He also earned the most number of points via attacks. He added 162 spikes, eleven blocks, and nine serve-aces, which led him to 182 points in total. Poland closed the first round of the 2012 FIVB World League with an overall win/loss record of 10-2 and successfully reserved a berth in the final round of the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from July 4-8 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Finland’s Mikko Oivanen put up huge struggle for his team, which closed the opening round of the tournament with unsatisfactory results. However, Oivanen did justice to his role and contributed 169 points, which included 146 spikes, 12 blocks, and 11 serve-aces.
Michal Winiarski from Poland claimed 132 points in 12 matches and settled in the fifth slot.
The ranking is likely to experience a change in the coming weeks as teams in the other pools will cover the further stages of the first round. Each team in the competition is supposed to appear in a total of 12 matches during the first round of the tournament.
