Top 50 players on the Official World Golf Rankings compete in the Cadillac Championship
Top 50 players on the Official World Golf Rankings are competing for the 2011 Cadillac Championship to be held at Doral Resort and Spa, Florida from March 9-13.The US $8.4 million event presents the toughest field in 2011, including world number one, Martin
Kaymer of Germany, British Lee Westwood, six times Cadillac Championship winner Tiger Woods, Luke Donald of England and the Northern Irish golfer Graeme McDowell.
It is the second time in the tournament’s history after 2005 that the top 50 golfers are taking part in the prestigious event."We're thrilled to welcome one of the best fields of the year to South Florida for the Cadillac Championship," Executive Director
Eddie Carbone said. "South Florida golf fans are always treated to an exceptional field of the world's best at this event, but to have all of the top-50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking committed at the deadline is a special treat. We look forward
to a memorable week of competition next week at TPC Blue Monster at Doral."
The defending champion, three time major winner, Ernie Els, nicknamed the big easy, is ensured stiff resistance in defending his title at the Doral Resort & Spa in Miami, known as the “Blue Monster”. Els, remembers his win as the pinnacle of his career.
“I’ve obviously got very fond memories of my win at Doral last year, especially as I played in the final round with Charl, who is a very close friend of mine. He actually came and stayed with me at my place in America for a while before the tournament, and
we’d joked about how much fun it’d be if we were to go up against one another on the last day – and that’s exactly what happened!” he said. With total earnings of 25 million Euros, Big Easy topped the European Tour money lists in 2003 and 2004.
During the tournament, all eyes are likely to be on Tiger Woods, who looks to regain his form. Woods will play at the tournament for the first time after dropping to the fifth spot on the World Golf Rankings after a disappointing first round exit from the
WGC Accenture match play championship.
The other players who have qualified for the tournament via the 2011 FedEx Cup standings include the Venezuelan sensation Jhonattan Vegas, who qualified for the tournament by winning at the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour Bob Hope Classic earlier
this year. The recent AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am winner, D.A. Points and the Northern Trust Open winner Aaron Baddeley, are also among the players to have qualified for the championship.
The prevailing hype of the tournament creates enough curiosity to see the winner of the star-studded four day Golfing gala.
