Top Europeans vying for honours at WGC- Cadillac Championship – PGA TOUR Update
The WGC- Cadillac Championship is ready to tee off starting Thursday, 10th of March. The field of players includes some of the top European golfers in the world. Just recently the top four spots in the world ranking changed hands and are now occupied
by Europeans. There is a chance of Rory McIlroy and Paul Casey finishing among the top five on the leader board when the final round concludes Sunday. This could potentially give them enough points to move into the top six. This could setup a European takeover
of the first six spots in the rankings, which has never happened before.
The field in Miami will be full of experienced golfers including some trying to make a comeback. World Number one Martin Kaymer, who missed last week’s tournament, will also be featuring in this event along with his European Tour members Lee Westwood, Luke
Donald and Grame McDowell. Tiger Woods also did not feature in last week’s Honda Classic because he was practicing on his swing and trying to piece together his game. The defending Masters Champion, Phil Mickelson, is also among the contenders.
Many from Europe are hoping that these Ryder Cup teammates in the top four can hold their positions and dominate the circuit. The course is expected to be a battle field, especially with the conditions of the course expected to be windy, which will be a
wind hindrance for all the golfers. The European contingent has shown class over the past one year and has rightfully taken over all the top four slots.
Westwood had a chance earlier in the Honda Classic to regain his number one spot but was unable to deliver. The Englishman only had to finish among the top three on the leader board to retain his title. European Tour member was a bit wayward in his shot
making during all the four rounds and is now confident that he will lift the championship trophy this week. Westwood since the past few years has shown great improvement in his play and this is the reason that he is considered the best in Europe.
Former world number one, Woods, will be making a comeback as this will be his fourth tournament this year. The fourteen times major winner is confident of his swing and he believes that his swing is in complete momentum and will be producing some under-par
rounds on all four days.
Before the championship starts, there is a chance for both Donald and Woods to improve their rankings further depending on the position of Westwood. If the Englishman fails to make it among the top-15 and Woods and Donald have better scores, then they can
move up the ladder.
