Top Golf Trio all set to face off in Dubai Desert Classic
The top three players in the world golf rankings are all set to face each other in the Dubai Desert Classic. Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Tiger Woods are all placed in the same group and will be teeing off together and playing against each other in the
first two rounds.
Martin Kaymer had a disappointing performance at the Qatar Masters where he finished in 28th place with one under par 71. The 26-year-old young gun toppled Tiger Woods off the second spot two weeks earlier after winning the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship
with an exceptional eight strokes. Lee Westwood also failed to make the cut in Qatar but still is wearing the the number one crown. A few days ago, Tiger Woods had the worst performance of his career so far in the Farmers Insurance Open where he finished at
44th. He was beaten by the rookie golfer, Jhonattan Vegas, by a shocking five strokes. However, there were visible traces of him getting back to the form yesterday, when he beat Lee Westwood paired with Miguel Angel Jimz and Jeev Milkha Singh paired
with Noh Seung-yu by two strokes on the Emirates Golf Club’s Par three course. Woods’ was pairing with his close friend, Mark O’Meara.
Westwood and Kaymer both have welcomed the suspected return of Woods. Kaymer in a press conference earlier said, “It would be nice for everybody, and for the game of golf as well, if he would come back again. It would be great to play against the best player
that ever lived in his top form.” Kaymer further praised Tiger and commented, “Lee and me are (World) Nos. 1 and 2, but in every golfer’s mind, he (Tiger) is the best player in the world. It would be fantastic if he can go back to where he was.” On the other
hand, Lee Westwood, unexpectedly and untraditionally, regarded Tiger as the greatest player of the game, “When I’m not playing in a tournament, I’m watching how Tiger is playing,” Westwood said. “I like to see Tiger playing well as much as anybody else. He’s
the biggest draw in the game.”
The other player to watch out for in the event is Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, the defending champion of the Dubai Desert Classic. He beat Westwood at the event in a play-off last year. Thomas Bjorn will also pose a threat to others after his impressive
four strokes win at the Qatar Masters a few days ago. The successful Danish golfer literally tamed the Tiger at the same venue in 2001, which is still regarded as the best win of his career.
