Top LPGA stars commit to feature in the upcoming Sybase Match Play Championship
The LPGA’s upcoming event, the Sybase Match Play Championship at the Hamilton Farm Club, will witness all top 44 money leaders on the Tour’s Money List participating in the event. The LPGA announced its preliminary field list on Monday which included the
names of Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie, Juli Inkster, Karrie Webb, Morgan Pressel, Jiyai Shin and Cristie Kerr.
"I'm looking forward to the Sybase Match Play Championship," said Wie, who finished second in the Honda LPGA Thailand Open earlier this year. "Last year, I made the quarterfinals, and this year, my goal is to make it much further."
The LPGA Tour is just coming off a sensational week at the Avnet Classic at the Magnolia Groove’s Crossings Course where Sweden’s Maria Hjorth won the title with a two strokes lead over runners up Song-Hee Kim. The event also saw some blistering performances
by the 16-year-old Alexis Thompson who had scored a five-under, 67 in the third round only losing to the immense pressure of the final. A win in the final round would have made her the youngest player to win on the Tour’s history. Alexis might be able to get
a sponsor’s exemption to participate in the tournament along with Natalie Gulbis.
Also amongst the stellar field will be the World Number One, Yani Tseng, and the defending champion of the tournament, Sun Young Yoo. Yoo defeated Angela Stanford in the final round of last year’s tournament to record her first victory on the tour.
The Tournaments executive director, Andy Bush, also addressed the media on Monday and reiterated the Tour’s commitment to the betterment of Ladies Golf. The tournament is being held for the second time in continuation at the Hamilton Farm with Sybase as
the official sponsor. Bush also talked about the strong sponsorship deals the tournament has been able to gather.
Creamer won her first event on the tour at the Sybase 2005 when it was a Stroke Play event. It was her first LPGA Tour career victory and it went a long way in developing her career in to a seasoned professional golfer.
“It will be such a great tune up for The Solheim Cup," said Creamer, who has two top five finishes this year. "I have a great relationship with Sybase and such great memories of winning my first LPGA event with them as the sponsor." Creamer has a paradoxical
record of performing better in the Sybase-sponsored events. She also finished tied for third along with Wie at the Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton in 2009.
The course at Hamilton Farm received a large amount of rain in the month of April with the downpour measuring no less than nine inches. The tour official’s are however confident that with plenty of hot weather in the following days, the course will be in
perfect condition for the tournament.
