Top Malaysian shuttlers will miss the Sea Games to remain focused on the 2012 London Olympics
The Badminton Association of Malaysia has decided that the top Malaysian shuttlers will not participate in the Sea Games which are going to be held in December 2011, in Indonesia. The purpose is to remain focused on the training for mega event of 2012 London
Olympics. Among these top shuttlers will be the world number one, Malaysian shuttler of men’s singles category, Lee Chong Wei, and the world number five men’s doubles pair of Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat.
The mega event of the 2012 London Olympics is the main target for BAM, as no Malaysian badminton player has ever won any gold medal in the history of the event. This time Malaysia has a bloc of strong players that have extensive international experience.
Chong Wei is in tremendous form and will be among the top favourites for the gold medal the Olympics. The duo of Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat will also be there to compete for breaking the deadlock. After a first round defeat in the Malaysian Open Super
Series 2011, the pair is struggling hard to get their form back to perform well in the upcoming event of the All England Premier Super Series 2011 to be played from the 8th to the 13th of March.
The Sea Games is the missing title along with Olympic and World Championships, in the collection of Lee Chong Wei. He has a far bigger target in the form of the Olympics and he desperately wants to win this prestigious title for his country. The world number
one is quite confident to play better badminton this time, as he lost against the top athlete, Lin Dan of China in the final showdown of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Many important decisions are taken by the coaching and training committee that works under the supervision of BAM, regarding the future of back-up shuttlers. According to the CTC, it will be a hasty decision to promote any back-up shuttler to fill the place
of Hafiz Hashim. The committee intends to examine the performance of Goh Soon Huat and Arif Latif for a longer period of time and will promote them in the squad of elite players, if they consistently improve their skills.
Many other top Malaysian shuttlers that will miss the Sea Games are, Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei h*i of women’s doubles, Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying of mixed doubles and Wong Mew Choo of women’s singles. The decision was taken by the CTC after having a
detailed meeting with the officials of BAM yesterday. An extensive training program has been designed for the top Malaysian shuttlers to produce better results in the 2012 London Olympic.
