Top Milwaukee Brewers’ prospect Santo Manzanillo all set to pitch – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers’ top prospect Santo Manzanillo on Thursday, March 1, threw the first bullpen session months after he had an accident which left him with a separated shoulder and multiple lacerations.
The potential tragedy in November could have left a lasting impact on his career, either putting an end to it or taking him away from the game for indefinite period. But after thorough checking, it became clear that the reliever will not need surgery.
Being considered among one of the top arms that the Brewers will most surely rely this season, Manzanillo had his first throwing session with relative success. Now that the promising young pitcher has taken the mound at Maryvale Baseball Park, he most probably
will be part of the Brewers this season.
The assistant general manager of the team, Gord Ash, is obviously satisfied with this development at this stage. He thinks Manzanillo is ahead of the schedule.
"He is way ahead of schedule," Ash said. "We didn't expect him to throw until the first of March, so he's 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule. That's obviously a good thing."
While Manzanillo must be understandably excited with his quick recovery and the ability to throw, the pitching coach Fred Dabney, has expectations attached to this player. While Fred Dabney calls him a huge talent, there is need of some workout.
"He's a tremendous prospect," Dabney said. "Like a lot of young guys, he's still a work in progress, but you see his fastball command getting better day after day. Being a power-type guy, who's to say he won't be a starter in the future? But for now, they've
got him working out of the bullpen, and it works. He's a tremendous prospect.”
The Milwaukee Brewers have got some of the talented hitters and pitchers to their fold. The presence of Manzanillo, who has a 1.75 ERA as a relief pitcher, will be an invaluable addition to the team.
Once the season kicks off, it will be interesting to see how Manzanillo proves his admirers right with the huge amount of talent and power that he has.
