Top Rank files law suit against Yuriorkis Gamboa for dropping bout with Brandon Rios - Boxing News
According to recent tidings, the bout between Brandon Rios and Yuriorkis Gamboa for the vacant WBA world lightweight title has been cancelled and Top Rank promotions, the promoter of April 14, 2012 pay-per-view, has officially filed a law suit against Gamboa
for breaching the signed bout-contract.
Rios and Gamboa were scheduled to headline HBO’s Saturday night show ‘World Championship Boxing’ and the terms and conditions were duly signed and accepted by both parties but mysteriously the Cuban Gamboa dropped the bout without any clarification or explanation.
It must be kept in mind that the bout was official and even attained the Nevada State athletic commission’s approval. The arrangement and the formalities of the bout were complete so much so that HBO also offered to pay $2 million for the epic championship
bout but things did not go well and now have taken a sharp twist since HBO has altogether decided to cancel the April 14 show.
Amidst all this confusion only a few things are certain. Gamboa has broken the contract despite receiving $70,000 in advance from Top Rank and Arena Box promotions, Bob Arum has decided to follow the schedule normally announcing that Rios will fight, and
last but not the least Top Rank have lodged an official complaint against Gamboa.
According to the details, Top Rank has stated in their application that, “Gamboa explicitly agreed to all material terms of a contract to fight Rios on April 14, 2012, including the date, opponent, travel arrangements, purses and advances.”
In addition, some critics are also stating that Gamboa might be thinking to become a part of Floyd Mayweather’s promotion since on the day when he missed the pre-bout Miami conference, Gamboa was found training in Floyd’s gym. This is the second allegation
thrown by Top Rank against some rival boxing promoters.
At the moment, Lee Samuels, spokesperson Top Rank, has commented, “Brandon will be fighting April 14 and we are working on the details now. There will be a fight April 14.” Cameron Dunkin, manager Brandon Rios, has put forth the media his client’s severe
despair and remarked, “Brandon is disappointed. He’s mad. He’s hurt. All those emotions. He was really looking forward it. It’s a shame, but he’s gonna fight.”
Richard Abril, the current interim owner of the WBA lightweight title, is being dubbed as the potential candidate for Brandon Rios but Dunkin has specifically mentioned that no contract has been penned down adding that talks are still in its initial stage.
No comments or statement has been issued from the Gamboa camp even Sekou Gary, attorney former WBA (super) and IBF featherweight champion, is also unavailable to clarify the ambiguous scenario.
