Isner got his first win over a reigning world number one, as he surprised unbeatable, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, in three sets 7-6(7), 3-6, 7-6(5) in the semi-finals at the BNP Paribas Open.
The American proved with this win that his win over Federer at the Davis Cup was not a fluke and he has become a serious contender at big tournaments.
Isner said, during the post match press conference, "I knew going into this year that I had the tools and I had the game to be able to at least compete with these guys.I take the court no matter who I'm playing expecting to win
and believing to win. There's really no reason to take the court if I believe otherwise. The win against Roger was very big for my confidence, and obviously this one will be very big for my confidence, also."
The 6ft 9in tall entered the top 10 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings for the first time after this performance. Isner relied on his big serves and inflicted Djokovic with the second loss of the year.
4. Roddick beat Federer – Sony Ericsson Open Third round
No one was expecting this result but the former world number one, Andy Roddick, managed a rare win over Swiss Maestro, Federer, in the third round of Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
Roddick took just over two hours to topple the multiple record holder in three sets 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-4.
After losing the opener, Federer looked in full command, as he allowed the 2003 US Open champion to win only one game in the second set. However, Roddick kept fighting and completed the upset victory.
The American overcame his poor form and stunned everyone because of this win. He finished Federer’s 16-match winning streak with this result.
This was Roddick’s just third win over the Swiss legend in their 24th meeting on the ATP World Tour.
