Top Tennis Players in 2012 Rankings – Tennis News
Tennis courts in the year 2012 have seen remarkable performances and new stars have emerged on the front line. The men’s rankings trends are approximately similar but the women’s line up have fluctuated to a great deal.
Considerable changes were seen in the WTA Premier Rankings but the world number one, Victoria Azarenka, is still holding onto the position she earned at the start of this year. She was the world number three by the end of 2011
circuit and her rankings considerably improved after she battled in the Australian Open final against the Russian beauty, Maria Sharapova.
The 23-year-old Belarusian professional’s game declined after her unexpected defeat in the fourth round of the French Open at the hands of the Dominika Cibulkova. However, she proved her passion for the sport at the Wimbledon Champion.
She contested against the American veteran, Serena Williams but unfortunately received a straight sets upset.
The right-hander Belarusian professional again mounted to the world number one spot for the Great Games held at the All-England Club. She struggled hard to withstand all the pressure but again lost at the hands of Williams in the
semi-finals. Later, she continued her journey and grabbed the bronze medal against the Russian contender, Maria Kirilenko.
At the US Open 2012, she beautifully sustained her winning run and battled until the finals but was unable to encounter the power of the 31-year-old, Williams. Despite of some of her losses, her position from the top seemed immobile.
She avenged her former losses by pocketing away the winning titles at the China Open 2012.
In the men’s ranking, Novak Djokovic, started this year at a classic pace and preserved his excellent run of form. He defeated the king of clay, Rafael Nadal in the final of the Australia Open, in a tough five-set battle.
The 25-year-old breezed through all the tournaments with a strong resolve to retain his world number one point. He seemed unstoppable and his powerful game was feared by all the leading tennis legends due to his outstanding Grand
Slam victories in 2011. On the other hand, the tables turned at the French Open when the Spaniard, Nadal avenged his former loss.
The Serbian number one received an unexpected loss at the hands of the Swiss veteran, Roger Federer at the Wimbledon. His critics believed that he completely lost his charm as he was unable to defend his bronze medal and further
he received some expected losses at the lower seeded players like Andy Murray in the semi-finals and Juan Martin Del Potro.
In this response, Djokovic told the media, “It is still open, the No. 1 spot of the world. Obviously I will try to dedicate myself and focus on every tournament that I play. I try not to think about what's going to happen at the
end of the season because there is still more than a few tournaments to go here in Asia and then the indoor season in Europe. Everything is possible, but I will try to not think about calculations, not think about any other players' results, and just concentrate
on my own game.”
Considering the alarming situation, he improved his performance and contested against Andy Murray until the final of US Open. He took out his vengeance against the British number one after winning the title.
He believes in winning back the number one spot from the Swiss Maestro, Federer, due to this he is heavily relying on his final win of this year at the BNP Paribas Masters, ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Event.
