Top eight female athletes put Istanbul into perspective (Part-IV) – Tennis News
Continued from Part-III...
Li Na
World number eight, Li Na, might be the last entry in the contest but her conquest in the last year’s edition of the Roland Garros French Open Championship should be a good enough alarm for her competitors. She can be absolutely
devastating on her day. Although there are some loopholes in her game style but she can be the most dangerous opponent who never surrenders in any circumstances.
Talking about Istanbul and groups, she said, “Always tough; doesn't matter if you're Red Group or White Group, only top eight players can play this tournament. Everyone's tough. It's a good challenge for you.” She is absolutely
spot on with her comment about the groups. Every player in the Top-8 category is unstoppable on her day. She knows the traits of beating the top ranked athletes so there is no point in writing her off from any chance of shocking the world.
Highlighting some of her outstanding achievements in the season, the three triumphs against the superior ranked Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland are definitely something worth mentioning. Li ousted the number one Pole in the quarter-final
of the Rogers Cup at Montreal; repeated another heroic performance in the Western & Southern Open at Cincinnati and then again in the last eight stage of the China Open at Beijing. She has just lost to her once during the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix at Stuttgart.
So, she has some positive to go with.
Li has also defeat Sara Errani during their only meeting of the season so far. It was the third round contest at the Rogers Cup in Montreal. She holds a 2-1 record against another Istanbul qualifier, Angelique Kerber; trouncing
her in Mutua Madrid Open as well as the final at Cincinnati. She lost to her in the quarter-final of Indian Wells. As far as Petra Kvitova is concerned, Li has defeated her once while fall victim to the Czech on the second face off in Montreal.
Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova are the only players who haven’t lost to the 30-year-old Chinese superstar in their five meeting during the current season. So, there is a lot of positive to be taken from these stats and Li
might be the last entrant but not the least threatening.
