Top five hitters for the month of August 2011 – MLB Update
August proved to be the most exciting and productive month of the year in both American and National Leagues. All Star designated hitter David Ortiz and NL MVP Joey Votto produced some impressive performances throughout the season. Highest averages, OPS
numbers and home-run totals were registered by both Leagues.
Although there were a number of hitters who did well during the month of August, only the top five are discussed here in this article. David Ortiz, Alex Avila, Joey Votto, Ryan Braun and Carlos Gonzalez are included in the list.
Boston Red Sox - David Ortiz:
Driving in 20 RBIs, David Ortiz is now ranked third in the Majors with a .993 OPS. He was the best hitter in baseball in the month of August 2011. The Red Sox slugger was outstanding with the bat as he hit with an average of .411, .494 on-base percentage
and .836 slugging percentage during the 30-day period. Despite missing seven days of play due to a heel injury, Ortiz put his side back on top with an impressive eight homers.
Detroit Tigers - Alex Avila:
Giving his side a huge lead in the American League Central, first time All Star catcher Alex Avila was absolutely brilliant during the month of August. Despite having a poor run in July with just .197 batting average and .584 OPS, Avila bounced back well
to register his best monthly stats of his career, striking .360 with an OBP of .472 and OPS of 1.169 during the four week period. Hitting seven home-runs in August, he put up a great show to change the course of his career. Raising the OPS from .830 to .910,
he ended the month strongly.
Cincinnati Reds - Joey Votto:
Joey Votto was the second best hitter in baseball after David Ortiz during the month of August. The 2010 National League MVP Votto hit .347 with an impressive .483 OBP in his 120 plate appearances. Leading all players with 25 walks, he hit an incredible
nine home-runs in the thirty day period. With a great .325 average, .993 OPS and 26 home-runs, Votto will be hoping to continue his impressive form for the next spring training and subsequent regular season.
Milwaukee Brewers - Ryan Braun:
Ryan Braun helped his side achieve an impressive 21-7 record during August, thanks to his highest OPS in the current National League. Braun had four home-runs, .436 OBP and ten doubles, as he batted with an average of .369 during the 30 day period. With
12 stolen bases and 24 runs scored, he led all the players in the NL, only second to his team-mate Corey Hart.
Colorado Rockies - Carlos Gonzalez:
Colorado Rockies’ out-fielder Carlos Gonzales had his best month of the 2011 season as he continued to impress the critics with some excellent performances. Hitting .340, nine home-runs and 30 RBIs, he helped his side win crucial games. He also raised his
OPS from .849 to .906 during the month.
