Top-five players to watch out for at Commercialbank Qatar Masters this week Part-1
European Tour is currently on a whirlwind tourney of its own on the sprawling Middle Eastern turf and will return to full swing with this week’s Commercialbank Qatar Masters.
The start-studded field will ensure a thrilling showdown of the giants through the four-day mega event sponsored by Dolphin Energy.
Grizzled veterans of the European Tour as well as the young trailblazers will be hoping to jump start their season with an early victory.
Bettor.com puts the following five top-ranked players as the best bets for this week’s stellar event.
1.      Thomas Bjorn
The formidable Dane is riding on a high tied for the moment, after closing one of the best seasons of his professional career last year.
He also performed well in last week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship where he pulled in an impressive joint third alongside Tiger Woods and Graeme McDowell.
He carded a third round of seven-under to surge to the top of the leaderboard and was once leading the round through the halfway mark. He pulled in another four-under on the final day to finish for a strong third.
Being the defending champion, Bjorn hopes to retain the Qatar Masters title amid a strong line-up of European Tour players. He knows the dreaded winds which can be of serious concern in the event.
He said, “The wind that can be in Qatar can make for very tough days out on the course. On those occasions you take a par, and then just try and roll in a few here and there for birdie if you have the chance”.
Bjorn won last year’s event, coming from behind and took the better of the field to lift his first title of the season.
Opening with a round of 74 on Thursday, he played amazing golf to eventually rise up the leaderboard, landing the title by a four stroke lead.
He went over to card two more titles on the calendar in the rest of the year.
2.      Lee Westwood
World number three and former world number one, Lee Westwood is another heavyweight in the field this week, who will be hoping to clinch a title earlier in the year to consolidate his position on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
He struggled in the Abu Dhabi Championship last week in wake of terrible neck and elbow injuries but persisted to finish off the event despite of his poor condition.
He finished for an impressive joint 17th in the event.
Westwood is also coming out of one of the glorious seasons of his career when he surged to the top of the OWGR earlier in the year and closed the season with stunning victories at Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa and the Thailand Golf Championship
in December.
He was dethroned from world number one spot at BMW PGA Championship by the winner Luke Donald.
