Top five reasons why Roger Federer can regain the top spot in ATP rankings – Part two
Here is the second and final part highlighting the top five reasons why Roger Federer can once again reach the pinnacle of rankings on the ATP tour.
3. Rafael’s ability to underperform on hard surfaces
The only contender on the ATP tour who has prevented the Swiss tennis maestro, Roger Federer from utter domination is still his greatest hurdle to the world’s top rankings. Although, the Spaniard does not defeat the Fed Express week in and out, he accumulates
more points than others on the tour.
The tennis, however, is mainly contested on hard surfaces throughout the season. While the 24-year-old Nadal is a player to win any competition he plays, the left hander has always struggled on hard surfaces.
A strong evidence of this statement is the fact that he has captured only five crowns in the last three seasons on the hard court. A slight fall on the asphalt for the world number one Rafael Nadal and a continuous surge for the sixteen time Grand Slam champion,
Roger Federer could suggest an important shake up in the distribution of ATP ranking points.
4. Hunger
Paul Annacone who is the current coach of Roger Federer, in one of his recent interviews, said that Roger reminds him of a 22-year- old boy as far as his motivational level and hunger for victory is concerned.
While the daily grind of the tour is lamented by majority of its participants, the Swiss native says he enjoys the life including the usual travelling.
All of us are pretty much aware of the fact that it is very important to enjoy the process and not be solely focused on the result. Roger Federer, without any question symbolizes that lesson. Several years ago, he while talking to the media about the busy
tour schedule and hectic travelling and training sessions gave another similar statement that he thoroughly enjoyed his practice sessions coming into Monte Carlo.
Tough training on regular basis is a very important part that helps a player to go out and enjoy while facing the most difficult conditions on the court. Former world number one John McEnroe also felt the same way as his brother’s book discloses the fact
that John did not think much of doing drills but in fact was competitive even during the training sessions.
Probably, this is the reason why John burnt out early whereas Roger Federer is still going solid at twenty nine. However, that does not necessarily mean that the Swiss is as motivated to triumph in every clash like a few seasons back.
In fact, the Basel born, himself has said that his days of capturing eleven crowns a season are gone. However, the right hander is still eager to prove himself as undefeatable when he is at his top level which is a healthy dose of wish.
5. Confidence
It would be extremely difficult to name a player on the ATP tour who is more confident and motivational than the Swiss tennis maestro. Off course, his confidence level is not the same that used to be when he was winning clashes left, right and centre back
in 2005 or 06.
However, if in those days Federer did not know what loss meant, now the Swiss has the experience of dropping from the top and rallying back right up there on multiple occasions.
Every time the 29-year-old has been written off, he has come back strongly on the tour which suggests his high level of confidence that never shatters no matter what ever the world around him says about this legendary tennis player.
