All the big name guys have been scooped up but the are 4 guys thinking about retirement who all have had long storied careers and could be a huge help to any team in the NHL.

Right now all the talk is about about Mats Sundin. Who has been seriously considering retirement. But there are a couple big names who may or may not be available for a one or two year push. If the Rangers take a pass on Brendan Shanahan (who shanny has stated is his first choice) then he might be available and would fit into a leadership role as a solid 2nd line player. A good mid-season pick-up might be Peter Forsberg who has expressed interest in returning but there is no telling at this juncture if he will return in 2008-09. Also Forbergs teammate in Colorados glory years Joe Sakic

is a free agent but if he re-signs it will be with Colorado and no one else.

Other than that I don't see a whole lot left except for minor league players and 4th line 7-8 defensemen.

Of the top 5 (see Gonchar's list) who might retire, I assume at least 3 will. That leaves very little left for household names. I think Sundin will play but you don't know for sure if or where. As much as I love the guy, all he will do for the Leafs is hurt their draft picks. He can't get them into the playoffs by himself, but he is good enough to bump them up a couple spots and out of the Tavares sweepstakes
