Top guns of snooker ready for Crucible showdown: 2012 World Snooker Championship
All eyes are set on the upcoming 2012 World Snooker Championship starting in May, 2012 at the Crucible Theatre. The top dogs of snooker are sharpening their cue sticks to grab the Crucible glory with their impressive snooker display in front of millions
of sports fans.
The World Snooker Championship is the most prestigious snooker event which attracts spectators from around the world. At the time the championship starts, the city of Sheffield becomes crowded with fans that come to see their favourite potters in action.
Thus, the tournament also plays a major part in boosting the economy of the city.
The tournament will feature the likes of 2011 UK Championship winner Judd Trump, the defending World Champion John Higgins, the 2012 German Masters Champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, the 2012 Welsh Open winner Ding Junhui, the 2012 Haikou World Open winner Mark
Allen, the World Number one Mark Selby, the former World Snooker Champions Mark Williams, Graeme Dott and Neil Robertson.
The participation of the former three-time World Snooker Champion, England’s Ronnie O’Sullivan might be doubtful because the Wordsley potter has been suffering from glandular fever for the past eight months. He did pull out of the 2012 Haikou World Open
and the 2011-12 Players Tour Championship (PTC) Grand Finals because of the illness.
World Snooker Chairman, Barry Hearn is hopeful of getting a great response from the spectators across the globe. He believes that the 2012 World Snooker Championship will definitely bring Sheffield into the spotlight and will play an important role in the
promotion of the sport.
Speaking to the local media, Hearn said, “The line up of 16 seeds is unbelievably strong. John Higgins won his fourth World title last year and he’s aiming to become the first player to win back-to-back at the Crucible since Stephen Hendry in 1996. There
are so many great players now that he faces a massive test.”
He added, “The Championship will put Sheffield in the spotlight on a global scale, watched by hundreds of millions of fans around the world and we’ve already had the biggest demand for tickets in the history of the tournament.”
Scotland’s John Higgins will be defending his title he won for the fourth time last year beating England’s Judd Trump. He has not been performing up to the mark during the current season which has raised questions about his form in the event. However, he
needs to pull up his socks to retain his title.
