Top miler Canford Cliffs retires on 4 August, 2011 to stud
The top European miler Canford Cliffs is retired on the morning of 4 August, 2011 after the Sussex Stakes injury he sustained. It is perceived that the 4-year-old bay colt incurred an injury while he chased Frankel for home in the Sussex Stakes and now he
is retired to stud.
It could be any sort of injury, but primarily it looks to be a knee injury but nothing is for certain at the moment.  The Richard Hannon trained champion colt, Canford Cliffs, have been magnificent to watch throughout his three-year-old racing career.
The main goal for the marvelous horse was the Breeders’ Cup at the end of the year, where he could’ve gone one on one with his rival mare Goldikova.
The last time these too battled it out was in the Royal Ascot, and Canford Cliffs came out of the hard fought race as the victor by a length over Goldikova.
Two months ago on the opener of the Royal Ascot, Canford Cliffs under his rouse Richard Hughes took on a field of 6 other horses, including the ever so threatening French raider Goldikova.
The pair rallied hard and came back from behind to finish off Goldikova in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes on 14 June, 2011.
It was a glorious moment for Canford Cliffs and his connections, as the champion colt did it in the Group 1 St James’s Stakes in the Royal Ascot last year on 15 June, 2011.
Again winning by a length, the colt did a double in two years in the prestigious Royal Ascot meet.
Although, the race that did it for him was his last race, in pursuit to finish the unbeaten run of the awesome Frankel, Canford Cliffs finished off his own career.
He didn’t come out well of the Sussex Stakes, as he had to push harder to meet Frankel. Sir Henry Cecil trained Frankel eluded Canford Cliffs quite early in the race and jockey Richard Hughes perhaps asked for more than the colt could produce.
His last race was the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, but the colt will be remembered for his racing endeavours at the Ascot, Curragh and many more.
His illustrious career ended at 4, and we hope that he produces a few like himself.
