Top places in Berlin, Germany?

Question

The situation is that I have only about 12 hours (from about 1 p.m. until midnight) in Berlin (travelling from it to another but got time between the transports), but I really want to see at least some places of Berlin. I have decided to focus on the Berlin's part of Unter den Linden (Potsdamer Platz, Reichstag, TV tower & so on). Is it possible? What else could I manage to see there? Perhaps you could suggest also some uselful links in English?

You don't have not much time, but I have good idea.

Get the sightseeing bus, driving over 2-3 hours true the Berlin and you can see so much in one time. Also there is somebody in there talking and telling what's all about, if you passing some famous places. And the price is not so high.

Have fun. Berlin is a great city.

It's a map of the Berlin subway. Just print it out at home, so you don't waste your time looking for one in Berlin. Just go to a ticket counter or a vending machine and buy a day ticket ("Tageskarte") and enjoy. Mind that you'll need cash in Euros, but you can draw cash from ATMs with a Visa or Maestro card.

I'd recommend you see at least the Potsdamer Platz (there's a subway station right there). The TV tower at Alexanderplatz is something one needn't have seen, really. Neither is the Reichstag. There is a public bus, it's either line 100 or 110, starting from the zoo ("Bahnhof Zoo"), that's driving through the whole city, and you can use it with your day ticket without paying extra fare. You don't have comments from a tourist guide, and there will other (regular) people be joining and leaving the bus, but I think that's the best Berlin experience you can get. And it will end up at Zoo station again, from where it's easy to get back to the airport, and for a snack, there's a McD just in front of the station. Don't buy food inside Zoo station, they'll rip you off! Try a Döner Kebap instead, the typical turkish-german fast food. You'll like it!

If you are travelling by plane, note that it takes around 1 1/2 hours to get from Tegel to Schoenefeld and about 1 hour from the S-Bahn stop Friedrichstrasse to Schoenefeld. Berlin is huge, take that into account when you go there.

Brandenburg Gate is right at Unter den Linden. If you head toward the tv tower, you'll see Berliner Dom. Go a bit further and you will be at Alexanderplatz....nice market area.

you can go and see charlotten burg wich is a very old part of berlin with a castle , or u could see check point charlie in stadt mitte (Central city) where the berlin wall is and it used to be the gate for americans goin to the russian sector

First, Potsdammer Platz is not on Unter den Linden, it's rather further south.

I'd suggest that your instinct is correct, though.  The area around the Brandenburg Gate includes the Reichstag (a couple of blocks north), the Memorial to the murdered jews of Europe (a couple Blocks south) and of course Parisier platz directly to the east.  If you walk on down unter den LInden you come to Museumsinsel - where some of Berlin's greates musuems are. With the limited time you have I'd skip going into them - and continue past.  YOu might visit the Gendemarkt to the south, then continue on to Alexanderplatz.  You first visit Marx Engels Forum, and the Nicholaiviertel to the south, but you can pass the Rotes Rathause (town hall of Berlin) the Neptune fountain, and go on down to the Fernsehturm (TV Tower). at the far end of Alex.  

Other places you might want to visit, but which require a little travel via the train system, are Potsdammer Platz, the Berlin Wall Memorial, and the East Side Gallery (near Ostbahnhof).  There is also the Checkpoint Charlie Museum.  

Also near the Brandenburg Gate, if you continue south on Wilhelmstrasse instead of east on Unter den Linden, is the Topography of Terrors exhibit (closes at dark, so go see it early).  

You  might also visit the area around Bahnhof Zoo - especially the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedaechtniskirche, the Kurfuertsendamm, and such.

For transport the U and S Bahn are great, but Bus 100 travels from Bahnhof Zoo to Alexanderplatz, past most of the great sights of Berlin, and Bus 200 goes from Zoo to Brandenburg gate, then south to Potsdammer Platz.

You can totally do the area you are talking about in 12 hours. Stick to the area around Friedrichstrasse, Unter den Linden, Potsdamer Platz and you'll be fine.  

Suggested tour:

Start at Brandenburg Gate/Reichstag and walk or take a bus towards Alexander Platz (only about 1 mile walk).  You can stop off at the Opera House, Humboldt University, Berliner Dom on the way to Alexander Platz.  Go to the top of the Fernsehturm (t.v tower). I highly recommend this (even though it is kind of expensive- 9 or 10 Euros)!  You get an amazing view of Berlin.  Have a piece of cake and coffee at the top.

Then walk to the Alexander Platz station and take the S-bahn from Alexander Platz to Friedrichstrasse.  Get off at Friedrichstrasse  and go downstairs to the U-bahn to get to Potsdamer Platz.   Get off and walk around Sony Center and stop in a restaurant or Cafe.  There are also a few museums just a few blocks from there if you are interested.  

From here you can either go back to Friedrichstrasse and check out Checkpoint Charlie (a real must-see if you are interested in the wall).  Then you could take the subway up to Orianienburgerstr. and have dinner up there.  

You can totally see all these places in 12 hours if you feel comfortable taking the public transportation (which is so easy in Berlin).  

Get yourself an s-bahn/u-bahn map first thing.  You can find them at almost any station.
