Top prospect Tanner Scheppers looks to stay healthy – MLB News
The Texas Rangers’ top prospect Tanner Scheppers said on Wednesday, February 22, that things will work out for him as he is healthy and ready to pitch. The 25-year-old right-handed pitcher has yet to become a regular Major League pitcher.
"I just want to go out and pitch," Scheppers said. "Everything else will take care of itself. I'm 25. Those prospect lists are full of young guys. I'm just hoping to be healthy and everything else will work out."
He had a chance in the past to prove his efficacy; but he was not quite lucky to make full use of it. What did not go in his favour was his fitness. He was victim to a back injury which proved quite damaging for him as far as his year is concerned.
The back injury culminated in his inability to play regularly in the season, therefore disallowing the team management to see if he could be part of the club in the near future. However, with the passage of time, it seems he is in good shape to pitch now.
It is for this reason that the Texas Rangers are looking forward to using him as the reliever. With Spring Training gradually gaining momentum, he is having a workout with full energy, committed to manifest his talent.
Scheppers is aware of the expectations that the club has. While he intends to be a starter for the Rangers, he knows the urgency of one’s performance and competitiveness has on the team.
"It's definitely nice to know my role going into it," Scheppers said. "Long term, I would still like the opportunity to start, but right now I have to go out and perform and be competitive."
The Texas Rangers have the depth this season to make things difficult for any rival when it comes to defence. They are indeed a hard nut to crack given the consistency they have shown for last few years now. What remains to be seen is the ability of Scheppers
to play the active and decisive part the Rangers will want him to show in the season.
