Top ranked Caroline Wozniacki commits to Sydney International event – Tennis News
World number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark is geared up to play Apia International Sydney 2012, a women’s tournament which is part of the 2012 WTA Tour taking place on the outdoor hard courts in Sydney, Australia.
The Danish number one will be the top seed of the tournament. It will not only be Wozniacki’s first tournament of the new season but will also help her warm up for the Australian Open, first of the four Grand Slam events held on
the hard courts in Melbourne.
21-year-old rising star Wozniacki saw an exceptional 2011 season which led her top seeded in this WTA event. She is ranked number one in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings since October 2010 with the exception of one week.
The Dane displayed awe-inspiring skills to grab titles at Dubai, Indian Wells, Charleston, Brussels, Copenhagen and New Haven WTA events.
Mustering her season further, she reached the title-rounds at Doha (lost to second seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva) and Stuttgart (lost to German Julia Goerges), and made last four appearances at the Australian Open, Rome WTA Premier
and the US Open. Despite her disappointing performance at the yearend WTA Championships, Wozniacki maintained her top rank as the second seeded Sharapova pulled out from the tournament.
Sydney International (formerly known as New South Wales Open) is a joint ATP and WTA tennis tournament and this is its 12th edition. The matches are held at the NSW Tennis Centre in Sydney, Australia from 8th January
to 14th January, 2012.
The tournament will chose three wild card enterers and four out of thirty-two qualifiers will progress into the main draw.
Chinese Li Na and Australian Samantha Stosur have also confirmed their entry in this WTA Premier event. The French Open titlist and South Asia’s first player to win a Grand Slam, Li is currently the second seed here. She is also
the defending champion (tumbled over Belgian number one Kim Clijsters in straight sets). 29-year-old made a final berth at Australian Open (lost to Clijsters) after her success in this event last year.
The US Open titlist, Stosur on the other hand is the third seed of the event. 27-year-old lifted only a single title but made final showdowns at Rome (lost to a former world number one Maria Sharapova), Toronto (lost to another
former world number one Serena Williams) and Osaka (fell to French Marion Bartoli).
Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis and a former world number one, Aussie Lleyton Hewitt have also committed for the ATP World Tour 250 series event.
