Top-ranked LPGA contenders confirmed to grace Walmart NW Arkansas Championship
The Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, which is scheduled to be played from June 29 to July 1, at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers, is going to feature a strong field that includes some of the big LPGA (Ladies
Professional Golf Association) stars.
The LPGA tournament is expected to stage a tough battle, as the players are already preparing for the second major event of the 2012 season, US Women’s Open. The US Women’s Open is slated to start from July
5-8, at Kohler — something analysts said is keeping the contenders all pumped up.
According to the officials, five top-flight players of the LGPA Tour have confirmed their participation for the prestigious event. The current world number one Yani Tseng, Anna Nordqvist, Cristie Kerr, Suzann
Pettersen and Laura Davies are confirmed to grace the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, presented by P&G.
Yani Tseng, who did not take part in the last tournament, Manulife Financial LPGA Classic 2012, is now ready to prove her mettle at this week’s battle. According to sources, the top-ranked star wants to atone
for absence in the last match, which kept her from further consolidating her number one position in the world rankings.
Analysts said that a stunning performance by American Stacy Lewis in recent tournaments has raised Tseng’s concerns, and she desperately wants to keep her rivals at bay.
Lewis currently ranks second in world rankings, and is seeking to grab the top spot.
Tournament officials said that they are pretty happy to stage the event just a few days before the US Women’s Open. Director of the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, David Shoemaker, said that he is confident
that the tournament is going to attract massive media coverage.
Shoemaker went on to say that due to the presence of some of the top-ranked LPGA contenders, the tournament will prove productive for golf in general and the players in particular. "Anytime you can have major
winners commit to your field it's a great compliment to the event," the Director said.
Shoemaker said that he looks forward to seeing more talent coming in, which will help the officials make much-needed improvements in the tournament.
"It speaks to the level of how much the players and the LPGA Tour enjoy the Northwest Arkansas community and how well-received they are by the fans".
