Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska pulls out of Family Circle Cup – Tennis News
Champion in Miami, Agnieszka Radwanska, has incurred an injury and will not be seen in action at the Family Circle Cup, contested in Charleston, USA. She is suffering from a back injury that just followed her monumental triumph
in the Sony Ericsson Open against the Russian former world number one, Maria Sharapova.
The WTA (Women Tennis Association) Premier tournament has already started on the clay-courts of Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island. The qualifying rounds are completed and the main round contest will be underway from
Monday. Bob Moran, the Tournament Director of Family Circle Cup was extremely saddened by the fact that the most supreme performer of the year alongside the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, will be missing from their strong line-up.
While airing this disappointing news to the public, Moran stated, “We're as disappointed as our fans to lose our top seed, and we wish Agnieszka a quick recovery.” An updated draw for the tournament mentions the Aussie tennis starlet,
Samantha Stosur, as the top seed in the tournament who takes this tag after the retirement of the Pole from the tournament.
Radwanska was also displeased by the fact that she was going to miss out on another title opportunity after gathering two prestigious titles in 2012. She mentioned in the statement that was presented by the tournament officials,
"While I am excited that I won the Sony Ericsson Open I am disappointed that I have to withdraw from the Family Circle Cup in Charleston. I was really looking forward to playing the event this year."
However, it opens up the possibility of another qualifier or either a lucky loser to make it to the main round of the tournament to fill out the place emptied by the Pole’s absence. The tournament of $740,000 will be the eye-catcher
this week and most probably allow the low-ranked players to hit the headlines.
The tournament features the likes of former world number one, Serena Williams, who holds the fifth seed tag. Another big name in the line-up includes the French tennis professional who became the first player in the world to end
the unbeaten streak of Azarenka in Miami, Marion Bartoli.
