Top seed Caroline Wozniacki undoes Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in tight straight sets
World number one Caroline Wozniacki was put through her paces earlier today, when she faced Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic in the third round of the 2011 Family Circle Cup. The fifteenth seed gave the Danish pro
a run for her money, fighting to the last minute when Wozniacki won the match 7-6(6), 7-6(9). The match lasted over an hour and thirty minutes, which is exceptionally long for a straight-sets victory.
The top seed has been on the top of the charts since late last year, although she was dethroned by tennis mama Kim Clijsters for a brief period earlier in 2011. She is only 20 years of age, and currently resides on Monte Carlo,
Monaco. Turning pro in 2005, she has spent almost six years on the Women’s Tennis Association Tour. However, one of her greatest failures is the fact that she has not won a Grand Slam title yet despite having ample opportunity to prove herself at the 2011
Australian Open. Despite this, she has been flying high and has lost only four matches so far this year. In addition to this, she has won two titles so far in 2011. This adds to her previous store of twelve trophies, bringing her total up to fourteen.
Zahlavova Strycova is currently ranked World Number 48, and is four years older than her Danish opponent. She is a right-handed player, and has been on tour since 2003. However, despite her tenure, she is obviously the weaker player
as she has not won any titles so far throughout the duration of her career.
Although Zahlavova Strycova is ranked lower than Wozniacki, she surprised spectators by putting up a great fight against her opponent. She scored two aces during the match, one more than that of Wozniacki. She also managed to break
her opponent twice, although the World Number one avenged herself by successfully converting two of nine break points. Both players committed no double faults, and played twelve service and return games apiece. Although both sets were incredibly close, Wozniacki
prevailed each time by playing more ruthlessly than her opponent. She won the match with 54 per cent of the total points.
With this victory, Wozniacki has brought her head to head against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova to 2-0. She last defeated the player at the same tournament in 2010, proceeding to the third round with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Caroline Wozniacki will compete against sixth seed Yanina Wickmayer of Belarus in the quarterfinals of the tournament, which will take place tomorrow. Wickmayer herself defeated Georgian qualifier Anna Tatishvili in the third round
of the Charleston tournament yesterday.
