Top seed Julia Goerges crashes out against Laura Pous-Tio in opener – NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies 2011
Top seeded German Julia Goerges fought back well in the second set but lost in her opening round match at NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies, an International level WTA tournament held in Bad Gastein, Austria. She suffered a 1-6, 6-2, 1-6
defeat at the hands of 26-year-old Spaniard Laura Pous-Tio on Tuesday.
The highest ranked player of the tournament, Goerges exited from her opening round match after suffering a harsh defeat with double breadsticks in a three set mouth watering match. The German, currently ranked at 16th in
the Sony Ericsson WTA rankings, previously lost to Pous-Tio in the qualifiers of the same tournament in 2007 and after losing this match, she extended the trail in the head-to-head series by 0-2 against the Spaniard.
World number ninety-four, Pous-Tio stormed into the opening set and got the desiderated break in the very first game. She then maintained consistency in her game to pluck in entire serves through amazing backhand slices. The Spaniard
broke the higher ranked German’s serve in the fifth and seventh game to earn the breadstick.
22-year-old German is in awe-some form this season. She made a ten match winning run in which she triumphed at Stuttgart and trashed the world number one, Caroline Wozniacki twice. Goerges also made semi-final berths at Auckland
and Madrid and came from a third round showing at Wimbledon.
She made a fitting reply in the second set after breaking the Spaniard’s serve in the first game. The German kept her savage mode to earn the second break in the third game and eventually took a 4-0 lead before Pous-Tio could hold
on. Goerges then held on to remaining serves to seal the equaliser with a 6-2 score line.
Pous-Tio re-focused in the decider and stroke out easy points to pocket first three games in a row. After Goerges held her serve in the fourth game, the Spaniard reeled off last three games consecutively to earn the second breadstick.
Overall, Goerges displayed dismal performance as she committed several unforced errors and five double faults. She also clobbered a lower first serve share of 48 percent as compared to Pous-Tio’s 66 percent and earned only 63 percent
win on it. Despite capitalising on two out of four breakpoint opportunities to her advantage, the German saved only three out of eight breakpoints conceded to exit with disappointment from her opening round match in this clay court event.
Next up for the unseeded Spaniard is another German, Kristina Barrois who trashed Ukrainian Lesya Tsurenko in straight sets later that day. The German saved both breakpoints faced and converted four out of nine breakpoint opportunities
to her advantage to seal the match with a 6-2, 6-3 score line.
