Top seed position coming in hard for Rory McIlroy
Since the time Luke Donald faced an unexpected and rather astounding knock out from World Match Play, the second seed, Rory McIlroy, has been yearning to clinch the top position.
He has already surpassed Lee Westwood, the former second seed, in terms of the number of shots, but still remains far from grabbing the position he desperately wants.
Even Honda Classic, so far, is not turning out to be the event he can anchor his hopes on.
Till the second round, Rory has been struggling with his birdies. At present, the leading positions in the event are tied by players such as Justin Rose and Tom Gillis.
However, the surprise package of the day was the American golfer Brian Harman.
With the help of his flawless birdies and eagle session, he was able to card a 61 in the second round of the event.
It is also important to mention here that McIlroy’s three birdies made on the last five holes, played a pivotal role in keeping him in the race to reach the top.
“Still a lot of golf left — 36 holes,” McIlroy said. “I just need to keep doing the same things, try to drive the ball in the fairway and give myself loads of opportunities, and try and take a few. Because you don’t need to make tons of birdies out here”.
According to experts, it is important for the Irish golfer to secure victory at Honda Classic if he really wants to grab the top position in golf.
Furthermore, McIlroy had easy chances to score a couple of more points on the day. He unfortunately missed them.
He missed two birdies, one from 5 feet and the other from 12 feet. On top of this, he made a bogey on the 13th hole that affected his scores.
Even the golfer himself realised the mistake he had committed.
“I had a few chances early on and didn’t take them,” McIlroy said. “Kept making pars and making pars, and broke that run with a bogey on 13 which was frustrating”.
Apart from this, some of the golfers, such as Johnson Wagner who won the Sony Open, once again failed to make the cut at the end.
