Top seeded Huber/Raymond crushes Makarova/Vesnina to reach semis – London Olympics 2012
Top seeded Americans, Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond, trashed the Russian tandem, Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, in straight sets at the London Olympics 2012 on Wednesday. They formulated a 6-3, 6-3 victory against the sixth seeds to power into the
semi-finals at this major sports event which is held after every four years.
The highest ranked duo at Games of the x*x Olympiads, Huber and Raymond showed top class performance to oust their opponents. After recording the victory, the Americana assertively powered into the final four.
"We want to take it one match at a time, but it's certainly nice to be back in a semi-final, especially at the Olympic Games," the delighted Raymond stated in a courtside interview after pocketing the match. "That was our goal, and we're here now, so it's
nice to be playing good tennis leading into the medal rounds. Today was a really good match for us."
Huber and Raymond made a slow start at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. They suffered the initial blow in the opening game to trail at 0-1. However, they made a spectacular reply and reeled off the following four games in a row. Apart from lavishing
their edge in the seventh game, the Americans capitalised on another break chance in the very next game, subsequently pulling out the opener with a 6-3 score line.
The American junction maintained their intensity in the following set and got the coveted break in the opening game to jump to a 2-0 lead. They held their remaining serves with poise and eventually sealed the set by winning six games to three.
All in all, Huber and Raymond cashed in five out of seven break chances and spilled six unforced errors in contrast with their rivals’ 17.
Next up for the American pair is the conqueror of the match between fourth seeded Czechs, Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, and the Taiwanese tandem, Chia-Jung Chuang and Su-Wei Hsieh.
Another American tandem, Serena and Venus Williams, stayed on track to defend their gold medal. They upset fifth seeded Germans, Angelique Kerber and Sabine Lisicki, in straight sets to reach quarters on Tuesday.
