Serena Williams (fourth seed)
American superstar, Serena Williams, ousted her fellow former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to book a second round berth against the 21-year-old Pole starlet, Urszula Radwanska.
Samantha Stosur (fifth seed)
The fifth seed Aussie starlet, Samantha Stosur, was one of the two players amongst the top seeds that bowed down in the opening round of the Olympics tournament. Stosur lost at the hands of the Spanish talented professional, Carla
Suarez Navarro. It was a taxing three-setter 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 featuring some outrageous stamina from both ends. However, the luck of the Aussie star didn’t favour her cause and she was sent packing on the eve of Saturday.
Petra Kvitova (sixth seed)
World number six, Petra Kvitova outshined the Ukrainian professional, Kateryna Bondarenko, in an epic three-setter 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to bounce into the second round of the Olympics. Shuai Peng of China will try to upset the Czech super
star in round two of the tournament later this week.
Caroline Wozniacki (eighth seed)
Dane number one, Caroline Wozniacki, outclassed the British star, Anne Keothavong, in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, to have a successful beginning to her Olympics campaign. Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium will be up against the Dane in
the second round.
Li Na (tenth seed)
Chinese number one, Li Na, was the second victim to fall down early in the London Olympics. She was sent packing by the 33rd ranked Slovak, Daniela Hantuchova, who clasped the win in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Ana Ivanovic (eleventh seed)
Former world number one, Ana Ivanovic, of Serbia started off her gold medal campaign at the All England Lawn Tennis Club with straight sets 6-4, 7-5 victory over the 20-year-old American, Christina McHale, on the eve of Saturday.
She is scheduled to take on the 102nd ranked Briton, Elena Baltacha, in round two.
Dominika Cibulkova (twelfth seed)
World number 57, Tsvetana Pironkova, outplayed the 13th ranked Slovak, Dominika Cibulkova, to book a berth in the second round of the Olympics tournament with straight sets 7-6(4), 6-2 win. It was her first win in six
head-to-head matches against the 23-year-old Slovak.
