  1. Lucerne is a very picturesque, busy little city, (the old part is nicest). I love it there...the only drawback is that it can be very expensive.

You can easily walk around the old part of town to see some old buildings(Markt Platz) etc

The Lion Monument is a well known attraction, as are the covered old bridges and water tower, and you can walk along what remains of the old wall that used to surround the city in medieval times.

You can take trips up to the nearby mountains (for breathtaking views)..such as Mt.Pilatus and Mt Rigi...first by boat and then by rack railway or cable car... (very expensive but worth it...you can buy a special ticket that is slightly cheaper if you do two different mountain trips)

Hope you have a great time.....take a nice walk along the river, go across both bridges...see the mountains in the background...ahhhh, just lovely.

P.S. a word of warning...its actually cheaper to buy a lot of swiss products..watches etc at Hong Kong or Singapore Airport or even Germany for that matter!

I would recommend the Lonely Planet book of Switzerland for great information.

check out this website for info.............sounds like fun! Would love to go somewhere like that!

  3. yes, Luzern is very pretty.  but it's much too touristy for my taste... even on a sunday, the city is crowded with tourists in the summer.  do yourself a favor, visit the little town of Stansstad 15min away.  the Fortress Furigen (or Nidwaldner Museum, the local name) is a military bunker carved completely into the mountains, with dark cave-like corridors, machine guns, operating rooms, bunk beds, pressure/water chambers, etc.  really fascinating stuff, even if you're not into war memorabilia (which i'm not).  you get to borrow wool military coats to wear into the fortress because it's quite cold.  it's rick steves approved too, btw.  on the walk along the "cliff" to the fortress, you're treated with fantastic views of the lake and Mt Pilatus.  Stansstad isn't a tourist attraction otherwise by any means, though you'd get to see how the "real swiss" live and get away from the crows (which i think is worth it).

  4. The prison converted into a hotel is neat

  5. The Wooden Bridge, Lion Monument, Old town, paddle boat in Lake Lucerne, etc.... (see below).

First time we stayed by the lake outside Lucerne, pretty romantic and quiet.  Second time we stayed right in town which was convenient.   If never done before, you might want to go to dinner show with fondue and yodelers, etc.  It was great fun.

Have you considered doing more things close to Lucerne?

We had a heavenly day riding the bus to take a train and cogwheel train ride to Mount Rigi!!   Bring picnic lunch and just enjoy spectacular view.  Hike down and when tired, find the gondola down and take the ferry back to Lucerne.  You can stop along the way for romantic dinner by the lake.

We luckily ran into a local wedding party with carriage and all.  It was one of our best day and so memorable.

Good luck and have a great time there.

  6. the Lion Monument

    the wooden bridges

    lots of neat buildings

  7. The must-sees are the Lion Monument and the two wooden bridges.

Right beside the Lion is the Glacier Museum which is incredibly cool.

If you have kids, and maybe even if you don't, the Swiss Transport Museum is the best. Plan to stay the whole day.

A boat ride on the lake is lovely, and of course the mountains, Rigi and Pilatus--but if you're going to other parts of Switzerland you can get away with missing those.

  8. Be sure to see the Dying Lion of Lucerne sculpture.  Mark Twain called it "saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world," and it really is.  I'm not much of one for sculpture, but I looked at this for a long time.
