Top six contenders for 2010 Tour Championship (Part 2)
Contd…..
The player who would be keenly followed by many is the World No. 2,
Phil Mickelson. The 2010 Tour Championship will be the twelfth time that Mickelson has the chance to take Tiger Woods’ spot as No. 1. Phil can easily accomplish that by finishing in no more than a three-way tie for second.
He has also chosen not to play at the Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda next month. Earlier, Mickelson was set to join three other winners there that include Louis Oosthuizen; who won the Open Championship, Martin Kaymer; who won the USPGA and Graeme McDowell;
winner of the U.S. Open. Since he isn’t playing there anymore, his position will go to the South African golfer, Ernie Els. Also, this means that no American would be participating in the Grand Slam event for the first time since 1994.
Mickelson decided not to opt for it mainly due to the fact that he was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis in August. He revealed his condition during the USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits last month. With the 2010 Ryder Cup following the 2010 Tour
Championship, Phil plans on taking some time off his hectic schedule and relax with his family. If Phil succeeds in grabbing his eighth win against Europe, he’ll become America’s joint record-holder.
The Tour Championship is the last playoff event of the 2010 FedEx Cup. The FedEx Cup has been a championship trophy for the PGA Tour while it marked the first time that professional golf had a play-off system. The FedEx Cup consists of four events: The Barclay’s,
Deutsche Bank Championship, BMW Championship and The Tour Championship. The top thirty players, who lead the points’, qualify for the last round. Since, it is a points’ system, people do get a hint of who is really close to winning the cup.
Moreover, the championship’s venue, East Lake Golf Course Club was first opened in 1908 and updated by Rees Jones two years back. It was the home club of the ever amazing golfer, Bobby Jones. In 1963, East Lake Golf Course even hosted the Ryder Cup. The
2010 Tour championship is also highly anticipated because it will lead to the player of the year award being announced. Obviously, the top six players mentioned above are in the race for it.
If Johnson wins, he will have three PGA victories, a chance to win two majors, a FedEx Cup title and a PGA Tour Player of the Year Award. Those are a whole lot of achievements right there. Speaking of the FedEx Cup title, none of the six players mentioned
above have ever won it before. The only players to ever have the FedEx Cup title were Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh. Woods has had the title two times. This means that all these in the race for the Cup will earn such a big sum of money for the first time.
After having looked at the leading players, now let’s look at who have let their fans down. A major disappointment came in after the BMW Championship, when Tiger Woods couldn’t make it to the Tour Championship. This was disappointing yet not unexpected due
to the way Woods had been performing after his divorce. He didn’t even automatically qualify for the 2010 Ryder Cup but luckily is still in the team after being one of Captain’s wildcard picks. With Woods nowhere near Georgia to defend his number one spot,
things can get quite lucky for Mickelson.
Finally, who will take the cup home? Will Tiger Woods still be World Number one after the Tour Championship? Who will get the player of the year award?  And last but not the least who will win the US$ 10 million? All these questions would be answered when
the 2010 Tour Championship tees off today.
