We often see the same names mentioned in lists of all-time great bowlers... but I'm not convinced that many of the usual suspects (including early-career Lillee, Hadlee, Donald, McGrath, Ambrose and Holding) WERE that great when it came to pitching the ball up and getting it to move EITHER way in the air (at will). Lindwall, was obviously exemplary, as was Wasim Akram. England's greatest post-war exponent may have been early-career Botham (though Trueman might take issue with that). We're often told Malcolm Marshall was the greatest WI exponent ever. The only recent bowler I think of in these terms is Asif... though the less said about him the better!
Beyond the pure swing bowlers there's the crowd with mastery of the outswinger and Hoggard-like reliance on the leg-cutter for getting the ball to go the other way: Bedser may have been the best, but I'm sure others were devastating when the ball would swing despite not swinging the ball both ways.
