Top ten players on the ATP tour in 2010 – Part three
This is the third and final part describing the top ten players on the ATP tour in 2010.
2. Roger Federer
The Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer might not have had a 2006 year replica but he had a descent one, by Roger’s standards. The right hander started his 2010 campaign with an Australian Open title in Melbourne, after getting the better of Nikolay Davydenko
of Russia and Brit’s Andy Murray on his way.
The sixteen time Grand Slam champion, however, couldn’t continue his form at Indian Wells and Miami as he suffered early round exits on both occasions. At the year’s second major event, the French Open in Roland Garros, Federer also lost his number one lead
as he was bundled out by the hard hitting Robin Soderling of Sweden. The loss also snapped his streak of consecutive grand slam semifinals at twenty-three and his finals run at eight.
At Halle, a tune up competition for Wimbledon, the 29-year-old suffered another loss at the hands of Lleyton Hewitt from Australia in the title battle. The Fed Express after surviving a first round exit reached the quarters at the grass court Grand Slam
tournament before losing to Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic.
However, since his Wimbledon appearance, the right hander has played superbly well on the tour. He advanced into the finals in Toronto, falling to Andy Murray in the end. After that, Federer broke back at the Cincinnati Masters and won the title over a resurgent
Mardy Fish from the United States of America.
At the year’s final major event, the United States Open in New York, Roger Federer, squandered a total of two match points versus rival Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the final four round. The Basel born next played at the If Stockholm Open and successfully
emerged victorious in the end.
Following his Stockholm crown, the Swiss tennis maestro, travelled to his hometown Basel, where he got the better of Novak Djokovic in three sets in the final. Novak was the one who had upset Roger in the same event back in 2009, also in three sets.
At the BNP Paribas Masters in Bercy, Roger Federer, wasted a total of five match points to advance into the finals versus local favourite Gael Monfils. Has the Swiss maestro triumphed in that clash, he would have reached all the Masters 1000 competition
finals in 2010.
World number two then landed in London where he won the Barclays ATP World Tour finals on the fourth occasion in his career. Federer ended up with an ideal 5-0 in clashes and 10-1 in sets. He overpowered Djokovic, Murray and Ferrer in the round robin stage,
and Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in the semifinal and title battle respectively.
The former world number one finished the season at number two on the tour.
1. Rafael Nadal
The Spanish tennis star currently holds the top spot in the South African Airways ATP list. The left hander started the season on a bad note, as he pulled out of his quarterfinal match at the Australian Open versus Andy Murray due to injury.
He gained his form and rhythm during the clay circuit in 2010. After winning his first season competition at Monte Carlo, there was no turning back for the Spaniard. The Manacor born swept the clay season, triumphing in all the events he played, including
Madrid, Rome as well as the French Open in Roland Garros.
At the grass court Grand Slam tournament in London, Rafa picked up his second career Wimbledon crown. Though, he did not have a great warm up to the United States Open in New York, however that did not stop him from winning his maiden US Open trophy.
By virtue of his Flushing Meadows victory, the professional tennis ace from Spain also completed the career grand slam, registering his name as only the seventh contender to do so.
Nadal is also the youngest in the elite group at twenty four years of age, something the Fed Express completed just a season and a half ago.
