Top ten women in terms of power rankings - Part I
Activity in the world of women tennis has subsided since the conclusion of the US Open at Flushing Meadows in New York. A few international competitions are still underway, but most of the top 20 women tennis players are not contesting in them. They have
decided to rest their body and game until the China Open which is going to be held in Beijing.
American tennis star Serena Williams is still the world number one tennis player, despite facing the probability of dropping down to the second spot if Caroline Wozniacki had captured the United States Open 2010.
Kim Clijsters has successfully defended her U.S Open title. The Belgian has now grabbed the year’s final major crown for the third time in her career. She is still looking ahead to win some more tournament at the Flushing Meadows in the days to come.
Despite the wins, power rankings are a good indication of how the players are performing in the middle. These include the most recent performances with more importance being given to recent tournaments such as the United States Open.
The women’s tour will end towards the end of next month with the WTA Tour competitions, which take place in Doha on an annual basis. Bettor.com takes a look at the top ten tennis women players in terms of power ranking points.
1. Kim Clijsters
With Serena Williams out of the scene during the 2010 United States Open owing to an injury, Kim Clijsters became the favourite to lift the cup.
She did it the hard way by getting the better of Venus Williams, Samantha Stosur, Ana Ivanovic and at last an over exhausted Vera Zvonareva in the title battle. Thus, the Belgian ace proved her mettle.
A majority felt that there would be a replica of previous season’s final with Kim facing Caroline Wozniacki as she did back in 2009. However, Vera dismissed Caroline in the semi-finals to power through into the finals.
With a firm dedication and the right approach, Kim has battled her way back to the top level of the women’s game, and is within a stone’s throw of taking charge of the number one spot in the world.
That perhaps might not happen as Kim wishes to give more time to her daughter Jada along with her professional life. As of now, her concentration on winning Grand Slam tournaments will be much higher and not on improving her rankings. Kim says that the rankings
will automatically jump as a result of major victories.
The Belgian is scheduled to take part in the China Open which is going to be held in Beijing against the best tennis players in the business. Kim however should also contest the WTA Tour tournament in Doha towards the end of October.
Afterwards, it will be a new beginning and another season of new Grand Slams to conquer. The Belgian at the moment tops the women side on the tour with her current power ranking points of 2,282.
2. Vera Zvonareva
Vera Zvonareva battled her way superbly into the tournament clash of the United States Open tennis competition, just as she had fought her way into the final of the Wimbledon Championships in 2010.
Her title battle in New York however was less inspiring than her final at Wimbledon against Serena Williams. Kim Clijsters got the better of the Russian in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6-1 and 6-2.
It was really disappointing for the Russian who initially played so well to get there and eventually had simply nothing to show in the title battle in one of the major tennis events. Hopefully, Vera will find a way out of this quite soon.
Her success up to the respective finals has been an impressive return for the 26-year-old as she prepares for the indoor events, prior to the year ending championship in Doha. Her power ranking points at the moment are 1,590.
